On the back of my firewire 410 there are two firewire ports. I only use one to send/receive audio, but what could the other one be used for?

Usually to daisy chain another interface to it. In your case another 410.

Could I hook up a firewire mixer? Would my software (logic express 8) automatically know it was there, or is some additional configuration needed?

It should be recognised, but as for hooking two USB interfaces in a daisy-chain? OH YEAH! there'd be some configurin' to do allright.

Firewire is DESIGNED to daisy-chain devices.

There's more than enough bandwidth in Firewire to stream more than 100 tracks with half the bandwidth left over for other things. Like multiple HDTV video streams (I edit video too and it's MUCH more bandwidth-intensive than audio.)

I'm running a Glyph firewire drive daisy-chained to my 828mkII with zero problems. Motu guarantees that I can daisy-chain >THREE< interfaces together for over 60 simultaneous ins and outs.

....that's the whole reason for Firewire.
