two computer monitors?

What do studios use two computer monitors for (screens, not speakers)? Do they link them up somehow to get a wider view of tracks? Or they're for two different computers, and if so, what purpose does that serve? I have two computers, both fast enough for recording, and two monitors. So my question is, can I somehow productively utilize them both in a home studio? Thanks!

i think aot of people like to put their plugins and effects on one screen, and their tracks and stuff on the other, so its easier to mix.

Usually they're both plugged into the same computer and it basically just used to make more room. What to put on them is up to you. If I were to get a secong monitor, I'd probably keep my mixer window up in one, and my tracks up in the other.

I have dual CRT computer monitors both connected to a "special" video card which allows me to extend my desktop onto bothe screens....thus more viewing area for larger programs etc.

Most complex DAW software packages have multiple windows for tracking, mixing, monitoring volume, CPU usage, etc. Even with a 17" monitor there is not a lot of real estate to space out everything you need. So, you either get a giant monitor (Apple offers some up to 30"), you spread windows arcoss different monitors, or (like I do) you do a lot of clicking and dragging with your mouse!

Your other question (about using two computers as opposed to two monitors) opens up a number of possibilities, including storing samples or sound files on another computer.

2 moniters to the same computer is the way to go.

I want to connect 4 but I haven't saved enough cash. I know a lot of people say you 4 is overkill but i'm a computer nerd. The more the better.

I always wanted 2 30" widescreens on the bottom for track view and console view. And then 2 above that for effects and maybe a screen to put vocal tracks on or whatever I need to be there. It would be a kind of work area.

Then if your doing video work you may want a video output going to a TV so you can see what the picture would look like on a tv. Basically a Program Video Out.

I also use 2 17''CRT monitors.
A brother sold me one a while ago cheap and did nto know what to do with it!

To be honest i got the idea of dual screen here, thanks BBS!!

Anyway, I use for lots of reasons!
I have 2 PC's. One is on the internet and the other solely for music purposes!
THey are even not in the same floor(i live in a house)
have setup a remote desktop connection. SO i am basicly all the time in the studio surfing the net (reading BBS :D ) when i am not recording!
And when i am recording i use 2 monitors solely for audio, i minimize the remote desktop connection!

I use 2 monitors for audio, msotly i expand the Nuendo window on both screens so i can see the mixer, all the plug-ins, transport, constatntly without going to the background.
And it's also cool, because i can play with another program at the same time, like Reason.

Anyway, the only problem is i would like to replace them with 19'' LCD. Once i have the money that is! :D
