Super Perfectionist
Hi,

Now that I'm getting close to releasing an album, I want your opinion on which is better to build a fan base with, Twitter of Facebook. I don't wanna be doing both, I just want one that I can rely on to get my word out there :) Thanks

Neither work very well, unless you have an existing friend network. FB with band page is the most likely to help though. Add Reverbnation to your list and use the player for Facebook.

:D

Thanks man. What about Tumblr? I just need some way of communicating with people :\

I tend to like Twitter more than Facebook for keeping up with artists. It's simple to use and easy to see your recent updates, whereas sometimes I feel posts get "lost in the mix" on Facebook. I would use Twitter or Facebook before I turned to Tumblr.

Just a quick note (not necessarily aimed at you, but for anybody trying to use Twitter/Facebook for their music): It's important to know that neither of these platforms will be a good way to "build a fanbase", but will be excellent at keeping up with your fans. In other words, nobody gets famous because they have a Twitter page. Just look at the list of most followed people on Twitter - none of them are famous for being on Twitter. They are all famous for other things and Twitter is just a way for them to reach out to their fans. I think Twitter/Facebook can be great as long as you don't expect to gain fans simply by using either service.

:D

Great advice - if you want to develop a strong marketing architecture, social networking sites should be an ornament to that structure, not a load-bearing wall.

Having a small-but-dedicated fan base beats a broad-and-aloof one by a mile. Bandcamp's best feature? If people want to download your music from Bandcamp, you can force them to trade an email address. If they like your tunes enough to give up their email address, you know they'll want to hear more from you in the future. This email list (and your subsequent email blasts) will generate a much higher ROI than Facebook posts, tweets, etc. Just keep it to 1 per month or less :D

Use both but sync one with the other to save time. So whenever you tweet it appears on FB or the other way around

You need a gimmick to draw attention to yourself, otherwise it will just be family and close friends following you. Are you a cute/sexy girl between the ages of 16 and 20? If not work on that gimmick.

Twitter's like news, Facebook's like hanging out. Either way you have to connect with people who enjoy your music. Billboards would be best if they had big PA's built in!

Very cool and realistic view of it all. Likes, friends, followers - whatever - pretty much meaningless. Gurus relate that the average 'hardcore' fan will spend about $200 a year on an artist they LOVE/WORSHIP, and that building up 1000 such fans would be enough for a band of 4 to make the equivalent of about 15 dollars an hour after expenses. If anyone thinks the number 1000 hardcore fans is small - it's actually a VERY high goal......

use one and connect it to other one, so it will re-post it and you will save time

This is pretty good stuff - I set up a Reverbnation account because of that.

I use facebook though more because I do videography and sometimes take pictures at the events so it helps build a bit of traffic for me. People love pictures of themselves.

Why don't you want to use both? They really are two different tools. Twitter is OK for sending out dozens of updates a day whereas Facebook followers will be less tolerant of frequent posting and will likely put you on ignore. So you have to use Twitter for frequent news-like reporting and Facebook for media-rich events.

Man this is so true. Any personal spin you can put on it is great. People want to be a *part* of something, not a target or a like machine. Good post.

Thanks man, and yeah that's so spot on... people love being able to tell their friends that they were included in some event. The human reliance on trying being more special than others... but hey I guess to have a winner you have to have a lot of losers too

You need to do both. Set it up that posting in 1 page will update facebook and twitter.

what about a huge yet cute and sexy dog headed person between the ages of 16 and 20? does that work?

Hi, ive been using facebook for the band, between us band members, we have 1200 friends. posting gigs on the band page, and us all "liking" the post, has almost doubled the average turn out at our gigs. 800 of our 1200 friend are local, word gets around. i put up a doors cover of riders on the storm last week, 9800 veiws. i think that works.
