I bought Pearl Export drums two days ago and the floor sounds to much boomy with a big vibration. I tried tuning really stretched but it just sounds dead. What should I do?
I've had this problem and have always solved it with a little plastic ring (forgot the name) that costs about $3. I usually slap one on my floor tom and tune it pretty high and love the sound. Dont know if youve tried it but thought i'd suggest it
little plastic rings = aquarian studio rings. at least i have some of those and they're little plastic rings that sit on top of your tom head. moongel is good stuff too.
I'm from the school of experimenting with your tuning until you don't need moongel etc. The amount of kits I've played that were covered in dampening to hide ringing drums is ridiculous.
i don't like to dampen my toms either. the way i see it, play with the tuning until you have a happy medium. That way you dont lose the tone of your toms and deaden them up.
I tune my drums so that they are the same note on both skins and then I have used a moon gel on the bottom head at about 1-2" away from the rim. This cuts the undertone ringing a lot for recording.
all the above posts are good in the short term, but this is in my favorites and is one hell of a resource. the most comprehensive tuning guide you'll ever see.
Pearl Exports come with some seriously cheap, thin heads. Thinner than a standard Ambassador. Get a decent head on the top (at least) and watch what happens.
In the meantime a moongel might be the ticket, but don't rely on them.
