Is there any harm in going in between standard tuning and down a half-step for a bass? The group that I play in prefer to tune down a half-step so my bass is generally set-up for that. But lately I'd like to head to some open mics, and while I can get away with transposing somewhat, I'd prefer to be able to tune up to standard. Would fluctuating between tunings cause any harm long-term for the bass (Fender P/J w/ Jazz neck)?

Thanks

lots of people drop tune with no ill effects however you may have to raise the action and or put a tad extra relief in the neck or you may need to use high tension strings to alleviate any possible fret buzz issues that can be associated with drop tuning.

My opinion would be to get a bass that is specifically setup for the type of tuning you are using. and have one that is setup for concert pitch/ standard tuning.
that way you will have no ill effects having to change back and forth from one tuning to the other.

Yeah, I thought of doing this with the spare basses, but I really like the main bass I play, so thought I'd pose the question.

Thanks for the replies!
