Tuning A Snare For Recording??

I want to jump on this little gem and ask what you feel is the best placement for a room mic, as well as the mic type?

Just throw out what you do and some tips, please.

Dammit, there should be a whole thread about the importance of and techniques of room mics!

I'd go for a nice condenser mic pointing straight at the snare. You can blend this in with the OHs, and close snare mic to get a nice snare sound aslong as you dont have any phase issues from using 2 OHs a room mic and a close snare mic track. You might need to nudge some tracks a bit to minimize phasing.

Everything depends on everything else - there is no formula for trial and error.

Generally a ribbon or LDC would be an appropriate choice. But even dynamics have yielded great results.

Try several locations in the room on axis/off axis. Try corners. Try boundaries. Try 3 feet out in front. Try behind the kit. You'll find someplace that works.

You'll have to try it and see!!

How many different skins did you try on the snare? Not every snare sounds good with the same skin. Not all snares sound good tuned the same way. You really have to find the natural tone of the snare. I have recorded many different snares. I have found cheap snares sound cheap and good snares sound good. Propperly tuned good snares with the right skin can sound great even with a sm57. My point is maybe you still need to play around with the snare itself as well.

Well there is no doubt that it is a good snare.... Its a Custom C&C 14x8 Snare. I have tried 3 different heads, but i might just be REALLY picky on my snare sound. I think I expect too much..... Heres a link to what I have gotten it to sound like.....

Well there is no doubt that it is a good snare.... Its a Custom C&C 14x8 Snare. I have tried 3 different heads, but i might just be REALLY picky on my snare sound. I think I expect too much..... Heres a link to what I have gotten it to sound like.....

The studio mix has more OH snare in it and your is more close sounding.
Try adding a tad more of the OHs in and boosting the OHs a bit at around 5k to bring out the snap.
Something about both mixes, they sound like a blanket is over them, could be too much compression over the mix or limiting or my ears could be tired.

My thoughts too. It is a good sounding snare. I wouldn't worry about it. Sounds fine.

I listened to the first 20 seconds of both clips. I agree with hoops and ectronic the snare sounds fine for the track.

The studio mix sounds like it has more room or reverb to it, but both mixes still work, it's just a matter of preference.

Actually my preference is the non-studio mix. I went back for another listen and I like it dry.
