tuning a drum kit

how do you guys go about tuning a drum kit? i have a specific problem of too much rattling out of the snare (especially during recording the rattling snare sometimes fits well and other time is excessive) and the floor tom almost never sounds right. i'm currently just recording live practices so maybe the rattling is justified by the bass?

if it rattles too much, just tune it up or down until its lessened. Try adjusting the snare tension as well.

Same link that I was going to throw out there. There is also a DVD out there called Drum Tuning: Sound and Design...Simplified by Bob Gatzen (http://www.amazon.com/Drum-Tuning-D...ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1232669444&sr=1-1) that covers a lot of the same techniques if you want a visual aid.

The DTB is great, but has a glaring omission - melodic toms (top heads only).
