TubePre/Mbox-2/MXL

I have an Mbox2 running to a TubePre. I am using an MXL-4000. I have quite a few questions id like to ask to be "refreshed."

I am getting a real fuzzy sound coming through. is there a way to prevent that? I dont have my phantom power turned on the Mbox. only the Tube Pre... that and the 80HZ turned on. I also have the gain on the mbox at standard settings at about "12 o clock" Drive is down and the higher I increase the gain on the Pre the louder the white noise gets. Suggestions?

It also looks like the VU meter doesnt work anymore and the LED on the Vu went out also. how can i fix this?

I would also like to know what the best settings on my mic would be for Rap vocals, and female singing vocals.
Example, best Polar Pattern? I also beleive there is a pass filter and a -DB option. I also have one of the portable sound booths that connect to the mic stand.

I am just looking to get the best out of what I have right now so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
 
Sunds like you might have the pad on the mic on and are using gain to compensate. If you are using the mic in an untreated room then use cardioid polar pattern and a high pass filter either n the mic or the preamp.
 
Thanks! I dont have a pad on. however the gain on my interface is off. im only using the gain on the Mic pre
