track hot?

For the "track hot" side of the bleachers...Do you recommend tracking with compression to get a hotter signal and prevent clipping?

I've been tracking a little less hot to a digital multitracker, and then later, boosting up the volume and applying compression where necessary in my PC to squash the clips.

Is it worth buying a standalone compressor for tracking (vs. what I just described?) I've read that somepeople advise tracking with no compression...

Everything I've read suggests not to compress unless you have a requirement to compress (eg vocalist who whispers and screams at various times during the same track, drummers and bass players who fall asleep and wake up at various times during a tracking, etc). I personally stay away from it since I don't fully understand it - other than to control "stray" peaks in the mix during an otherwise acceptable take. I'm not talking about compression during mastering, but rather mixing. Application of compression during mastering is (I think) a whole different ball game.

My approach is to ATTEMPT to track and set levels so as to render compression unnecessary during mixdown. However, despite my limited knowledge/experience I have learned enough to know this is fairly unrealistic.

Tracking alone, I find it very difficult to set the proper levels. I'll try and hit a note which I think will illicit the maximum level, and then during actual recording I glance at the VU's and it's on fire. Anyone know of a mouth-controlled mouse?

Since you're paying attention to this thread... could you help me out? When recording (digital) vocals and acoustic guitar, do you typically record with compression?

My choice appears to be, either record hot and use compression to help squash the clips, or record not as hot and add compression later if necessary. Maybe there's another choice...

I also attempt to record without compression for reasons psmith66 mentioned. There probably isn't a right or wrong way....TRY it and see what sounds better to you and in your situation. If recording digitally really try to avoid clipping...track at -3 to -6 dB max.

I bring my keyboard into the room where I actually record and have considered buying and extension for the monitor and mouse. I was able to get away with a total of 21 feet of keyboard cable (7 original + 15 extension) but a 25 foot extension did not work....lost too much signal. I'm not sure about the mouse extension lengths that will work but I think they sell signal boosters for the purpose...

...just a thought.

I avoid compression (and other processing, unless it really fits the song) while recording except when absolutely necessary.... I would favour headroom over adding compression during tracking - if you mess up on the compression settings, there's no way to undo it!

I have everything in the same room (11' x 15'). PC is in one corner - so once I've established the levels, I will set up the mic or whatever in the opposite corner (especially for Strat recorded on a single pickup setting via a POD - monitor causes quite a hum). I will go to the PC, make sure the cursor is on "record", turn off the monitor, click the mouse, and get back to the guitar, mic, whatever. Of course I have to allow for at least five or six seconds prior to the beginning of the recorded part. Is this nuts? YES! As soon as one of my kids gets old enough, I'm going to pay them to manage the PC!

I do a lot of vocal work w/ a LD condenser...which is why I move to a different room w/ the keyboard. I had more of a problem with Hard drive and fan noise w/ the sensitive mic. You bring up two good points though...

1) My also get monitor hum.... hmmmmm :)

2) When they are old enough to be QUIET....get the kid to do it!

Tactical interface...can you explain more? Is that for outboards (you mentioned Roland) or can they be used when recording with the PC only?

I think he's referring to a piece of hardware that you use with a PC DAW. It looks like a standalone multitrack recorder, but it is really a user interface that you plug into your computer and use to control your PC DAW, instead of a keyboard+mouse.
