Furthermore, I have come to the conclusion that: NO ONE IS SATISFIED WITH ANYTHING, I STRESS NO ONE, I STRESS ANYTHING. Everyone I know tires of what they have and desires something "better."
Which is why you should always look for stuff on the "used" market. :D

I think you're on the right track with your research plans. Knowledge is power. Are you looking for a "Swiss army knife" mic? That's a tall order, but one I can think of comes close. An AT4033. IN IT'S PRICE RANGE, it's a decent all arounder (is that a word?). Not bad on vocals, great on acoustic guitar, one of my first choices on a guitar amp, pretty good as drum overheads. Not my first choice on these things when I have a choice and a variety of mics, but as a desert island mic, you could do worse.

Thank you for your suggestions.
FP, I am fearful of buying used for this product. Probably most used items are ok. I do not have the time or patience to deal with the cases where the merchandise is not ok. A mic is sosensitive and is so easily damaged by an "accident" or mistreatment.
I do not have the patience or time to FU on such problems. I have tried "blems" but have become weary of that as well for other merchandise. I have had good experience blems, but also some problems. Much of this merchandise is so complicated that only a careful end-user after an extensive period of use can really understand what works and what does not.
With a mic, I do not even know what the full specs are supposed to be.
IMHO and in my personal experience.
Thanks again to all for your advice and sharing your experience, especially to FlatPicker.

What do tube mic users use their tube mics for? Where do they give their best results?

M147 for kicks, bass-cabs and acoustic guitars.

GT44 shines as overhead mic's!!

UM92.1s cool for ambience and FOK from time to time.
