What are tubes? Some glass and metal? Why in the hell are they so hard to make? I mean come on. They're fancy light bulbs. Why in the hell has'nt someone duplicated the old Mullards by now?

just like a stradivarius is just a collection of wood and glue? so easy to copy. right?

Just quit buying Sovtek and be done with 'em.....

I gave up Sovtek the day after I bought a tube amp and a tube preamp. Couldn't remove those stock tubes from the gear fast enough....

Yeah, but what will happen to the price of other tubes if suddenly everyone gives up Sovtek tubes (voluntarily or otherwise) and wants to buy NOS and other manufacturer's tubes?

Keeping in mind that apparently Sovtek supplies two-thirds of all music related vacuum tubes.

I agree that there are cetainly better tubes out there than Sovtek (although their low noise 12ax7s aren't too bad) and I have pulled them out of all my recording gear and my guitar amps and replaced them with better tubes. But most people (two thirds of them) haven't and I don't know that I necessarily want them all to have an incentive to do so.

This is fairly old news in the gear industry.

While there has been a lot of strong arm bullshit going on over there, Mike Matthews (who founded and owns Electro-Harmonix) has said repeatedly and publicly that he will not back down. To date, ALL of the legal cases which have been filed have come down on the side of Matthews and Sovtek. With the level of coruption involved over there, one can never say, but I read an article a few months back in which the US State Department was starting to get involved, and with the amount of aid money the US is sending over there, I would say that the outlook is not nearly as dire as the article makes it seem. That being said, it is still very important to get the news of this out to as many people as possible, because if US business people start thinking that an investment in Russia is that easy to loose, that is going to put more pressure on the Russian government to do something about it.

Russia is a very problematic place to do business these days. About 6 or 7 years ago my firm had an American client that had a business services concession in an international hotel chain in Russia. He got in a dispute over his business agreement and was ultimately shot and killed there. If I was doing business there and was having problems with the locals, I'd definitely be watching my back.

Their product isn't any better than anybody elses.....and there are enough groups making tubes that the price will not skyrocket if sovtek pukes.... I say drop 'em. When people give replies about what tube sets to buy to get great amp tone, nobody ever says "Get a matched set of sovteks!"

That's true, their product isnlt any better than anybody else's, but if they indeed have 2/3 of the market currently, I strongly question whether other manufacturers can replace them very quickly. If they can, great. If they can't, then we will have demand driving up the price for the then availabkle tube supply. Can other manufacturers ramp up quickly to cover the 2/3 of the market they don't now have?

I though the Sovteks did a better job in one of my cheap-o pres than the chinese Nationals that came with it. The best was swaping the 12ax7's for a 5751.
