Was just playing a progression and can't work out what chords these triads are implying, i think i'm playing in c#minor

E G# C#

D# F# B

D F# A

C F# A

I came up with C#m, Bmaj, F#dim, F#min....the f#dim doesn't sound as good as the rest though,

any help greatly appreciated

i uploaded a recording of the triads i played

I can't make this download open. Probably something silly I am doing. I also haven't brought my guitar down here to try it.

Others may have the same issue.

That page you linked to is fubar. In fact, I looked at the source and there is no link to a sound clip of any type.

Anyways, you got 1 and 2 right, the 3rd spells out Dmaj. If the first note to the fourth chord is C natural, then it implies a F# dim

considering that chord three is a D and the next simply drops the D to a C i'ld condider it a "rootless" D7...

If you left click on the link it will take you to a page that has Sendspace RapidShare Megaupload & Up-File. You then left click on the name of one of those sites and follow the pages instructions for downloads

http://www.sendspace.com/file/g4lpai thats the sendspace link from the sharebee page. Sharebee just re-uploads the files so they never get deleted

Thanks for the replies!

E G# C#

D# F# B

D F# A

C F# A

are you sure that's what you play?

i just don't hear a diminished quality in the last chord

the bass movement sounds like a half step to me D to C#

so you have

c#min/e Bmaj/D# Dmaj F#min/C#

Stupid D7s! Always wandering about aimlessly. Settle down already. :D

If you inverted the final triad from C F# A to F# A C it might lead back to the tonic of the C# minor chord a little cleaner. Less rootless - you know some D7 have been rootless for years. Please help to find D7 a root (all the Australians will know what I mean - it s a vernacular thing)

Nice progression though – played around with it starting with G#m then to the C#m but then moved the E to F making it a major just before I went to the Bmj then the D back to G#m again – second phrase then reminded me of the 80s song Fade to Grey by Visage.

I put a pad playing

G# C# E (Cm)

F# B D# (bmaj)

D A D (Dmaj)

F# A C# (Fmin cos fdim just sounded intense)

put it on soundclick this time :)

Something wierds going on in bar 3 three of the loop though

nb the sharps may be enharmonically incorrect (right word?), i'm just using that rather than flats cos i can't work out what they should be

The last triad is a Cdim and you could use it to resolve back into the C#minor. Try using the Cdim to take you into an Emaj or a Gmaj if you are looking for somewhere else to go with the progression and see where that inspires you to go. The Cdim does pull your ears out a bit after the plainer C#m; Bmaj and Dmaj. The Cdim triad could imply a D7 or D7b9 (the D7b9 could take you into a Gm). It depends what type of tune you are making as to where you take it :)

Maybe I'm not looking at it right - but the last triad in the latest post looks just like an F#m to me - not sure about dim or implied D7 or are you talking about the original posting??? Placing the whole progression, pretty well in the key of A or F#m (realtive) - except for the sharp D in Bmj chord - which then implies the key of E and the C#m could live there too. Thats what makes it interesting.

to me it's reminescent of jan hammers miami vice stuff... kinda like crockets theme... it sits pretty well in the C#min except the Dmaj throws you... it seems to be a borrowed chord from what would be C#phrygian (think key of A)

cool....

Hey there Whatmysay, yes I was refering to the original post where the cord in question was C F# A. So the C# F# A you suggested does make a F#m :) Enough theorising ~ lets jam it out until we work it all into a new song:D

I like thoerising for inspiration, this threads giving me heaps of ideas...i'll come back in a few days with a new version. Maybe even other people will decide to use the progression as well, inspiration all round.

True. I do too. It's always interesting to apply some theory to inspire new ideas and directions.

Actually, C F# A is not a C dim, it's an inverted F# dim (F# A C)

C dim would be C Eb Gb (F#)

Just FYI

Thanks Beagle ~ I'm brushing up on my theory :o . I looked at it as fitting the 4 note cord shape of the dim with root note on 3rd fret A string, then 4th fret on D, 2nd fret on G, 4th on B (C, F#, A, D#). I was thinking visually and looking for other cord and scale shapes that could tie in. I've been playing around with Wreckd504's cords and with other ideas suggested on this thread and its inspired the framework for a tune so thanks all around :) (Didnt end up using a dim in the end :o ).

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, but how do you make a 'soundclick'? I'm new to using a computer for music applications (got my first ever decent spec'd computer 2 months ago ~ so I guess its obsolete by now  ). Current priorities are finishing songs in my BR1600CD then transfering the mastered mixes into the computer and then turn them into MP3. A webpage is on the agenda too. Everyone seems to be into MySpace but what else is out there that is a good? I've still got alot to learn.

Myspace is good for the networking, but soundclick is good because you can add lots of tracks. Free accounts have a 128kbps mp3 limitation, but 128 is still alright quality for just showing ya compositions.

Anywayz, go here and register for free and throw ya beat up i'm keen to hear it!

https://www.soundclick.com/community/NewSignup.cfm?Band=Yes

Its real easy, just follow the instructions.
