Hello,

I'm trying to get these specific kinds of guitar sound- any advice on pickups/amps/guitars/effects for obtaining the following guitar sonics. I'd like to keep guitar purchases to a minimum; currently I have a 97 Fender Mexican Std. Strat and an 05 Les Paul Std. I'd like to work with a budget of about $3000 max, so versatility when it comes to amps/guitars/effects/pickups is preferred. Think:

1. John Squire's playing on The Stone Roses self-titled debut and early singles. Songs like Elephant Stone, I am the Resurrection, This Is the One, Sally Cinammon, etc. The second coming of Johnny Marr, no pun intended for you Roses fans.

2. Nick McCabe during his years with The Verve. Songs like All in the Mind, Slide Away, A New Decade, This Is Music, Catching the Butterfly. A dark, swirling, neo-psychedelic sound.

3. The Lou Reed/Sterling Morrison combo with The Velvet Underground. Songs like I'm Waiting for My Man, The Gift, and of course, Sister Ray. The sound of urban decadence and decay drenched in noise, feedback, and pounding 3 chord riffs.

4. Robert Fripp's work with David Bowie and Brian Eno. Songs like Needle in the Camel's Eye, Blank Frank, and of course, Heroes. Futuristic prog-rock meets Velvet Underground meets sci-fi weirdness.

5. Early Elvis Costello. Songs like Miracle Man, Blame It on Cain, The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes, This Year's Girl, I Don't Wanna Go to Chelsea, and Radio Radio. 1950's punk.

And just once in a while for fun,

5. Bernard Sumner's guitar work with Joy Division and early New Order. Songs like Atrocity Exhibition, Shadowplay, Day of the Lords, and Ceremony. Defined the 'edgy' guitar sound unlike anyone else.

The best way to get an impression of what I'm trying to achieve is to listen to the songs. Any advice on any or all would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Ron

Get a modeler and play with it. My Vox AD120 kicks butt. Nothing else will give you so many DIFFERENT sounds in one package.

Thanks- took a look at the thread. Does anyone know if Fripp used Frippertronics for the David Bowie song Heroes?
