But, Ok I bought a Tascam 34, in good shape. Now I use Fostex (btw, not listed on favorite reel to reels..ouch). The problem is this. To test out the 34 I take an acoustic song like say Little Martha...go from mixer to 34 and I get a weak muddled sound, wow/flutter, at the beginning of the tape..which clears up about 3min into the reel...BUT....If I go mixer Model 80 input output direct, the signal to the 34 is strong and clear and a clean copy of the model 80 goes onto the tape of the 34...no wow/flutter just a good solid clean sound...btw I love to watch the 10.5 inch reels rewind on the 34, they hum...Why is going thur the 80 making all the difference in the sound on the 34...the db are reading the same..thanks...
