I'm in the process of evaluating Cubase SX vs. Sonar vs. Cool Edit Pro and ran into a problem that I hope someone can shed some light on.

I imported 3 tracks from my Mackie MDR (24 bit/48 kHz) to use for playing around with these different programs to get a feel for how they function. The first one I did was Cool Edit Pro and it was okay, but I didn't care for the way the effects were implemented (at least in the demo version).

So, next I install the Cubase SX demo and then import the 3 wave files. I push play, and something sounds wierd. I go back to my original file and realize that the wave files as tracks in Cubase have been slowed down (which lowered the pitch). The only thing I did was select the import function (never even looked at the other menus yet), so I know I didn't change anything, but is there something that is causing this that I need to check for?

BTW, I went ahead and ran a mix on the slowed down files just for grins and really liked the control arrangement, the way effects are handled, and so forth. The only thing that took a bit of getting used to was the eq on the mixer screen, but I think part of that problem was due to the slowed down/lowered pitch which really threw me off because I know the voice of the girl I recorded quite well and I had a really hard time getting it to sound natural.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated. I think my reverb unit in my analog setup is fried, so now I'm trying to decide whether to buy new hardware or go for some software.

Thanks,
Darryl.....

do you have spdif inputs turned on???

ive found that subase will slow files down in pitch and speed if you have spdif inputs running....have no idea why, but when i trun OFF my spdif inputs all files play back regular speed....

Interesting. I don't have any S/PDIF inputs on my laptop that I'm using for this, but I'll check to see if something like that is turned ON.

Check your sample rates. If they don't match up (ie. importing a 48khz file into a 44.1 project) then the pitch will change. In Cubase SX, go to your project preferences and select the sample rate there to match the files you're importing.

Thanks Chris. That was the missing link I needed to find. It is interesting the thing with sample rates. I figured it was related to that but hadn't found the right spot to change it. In CEP the project automatically adapted to the 48k rate, so I didn't have to configure for that.

Anyway, now its time to see how this program will work.

Thanks!!!
