What does the True Tape effect do? the Help thing says it is a new "paradigm of recording" or some shit, but i figure it is just some kind of effect. What does it do? it just seems like it makes it louder.

My understanding is that.... The new True Tape Technology allows users to simulate the effect of tape saturation when recording in 32-bit mode. With true tape emulation, you can finally get that analog warmth you’ve been looking for from a hard disk recording system. The new “tape saturation” function lets you record guitars and drums like a real tape machine would.

Yada yada yada ..... Yeah copied and pasted. :D

I haven't been able to tell whether it adds any warmth or not, but it definitely does increase the volume.

When we used magentic tape as our primary medium to capture basic tracking (and everything else really), it was possible to get a degree of compression from saturating tape beyond 0 dbs. This is the creates the "warmth" of using analog 2" tape that you may have heard about in the past. In the digital realm it is usually bad to let your levels go above 0 db as you run the risk of clipping (which is just distortion and generally considered to be unwanted). Plugins like "True Tape" offer a warming effect give smoother compression that was possible by slightly saturating magnetic tape. Some people feel it adds warmth back to "cold" digital tracks.

interesting.

i still think all these analog emulators sound terrible, tho.

thanks guys!
