Does anyone own a Precision 8 or a Psolo?

ANy comments?

I was thinking .."what a great buy for the number of pre's you get".

I usually record my own projects in the rock / alternative style of music.

Any takes on using identical pres on the entire drum kit, or mixing it up?

Go for it!

I've been using the Precision 8 for about a year now. I highly recommend it - great sound, detailed, not really colored at all. Drums sound great - clean, tight, focused (great low end). Great price! It's one of my best kept secrets. You won't be disappointed.

I have a P-Solo on the way and am looking forward to it. I've seen complaints that the True stuff is "bland" or "boring", but I'm confident this comes from people who have used high-end gear that imparts character like Neves, Great River's, etc. The True's are transformer-less, and I think there are only two capacitors (if any) in the signal path - hence the clean sound and what some would call "no character".

I'm looking forward to getting clean, detailed and I guess boring tracks :D

Same to say over here, though I haven't had a heck of a lot or experience to compare -RNP, Symetrix, mackie, (now Chameleon, that one very different...

I had one on loan from a colleague for a couple of months. It is decent. Not really a "clean" box in the truest sense, but very HQ. My personal favorite 8 channel preamp is the DAV BG-8 , which is cheaper than the true systems, and of which I have 22 channels. I also like the ATI 8 channel pre.

if you are looking at 8 channels, look at DAV and ATI as well. plenty of info on both at www.gearslutz.com/board

the DAV is 8 channels for around 2,000. ATI is around the same price I believe. FWIW, David Gilmour bought 8 of the bg-8s for his recent world tour.

I've used the Precision 8, and found it to be mostly a waste of valuable rack space.

You could probably do just as well with an _______ (insert mixer pre of your choice here). It's about as overpriced for what you get as one of Big Ray's little DAV toys he keeps jizzing over. And that's saying a lot.

I'd just assume use something like a Yamaha mla7, and get similar quality for about 1/100th the cost.

Hmm... THe Chess puts on out there.

So Chessrock what would you recomend in a four or eight channel mic pre?

No firsthand experience, but I heard a Blue Note label recording that was done with the P8, and I thought the whole disc sounded incredible. Not that the pre was responsible for the whole sound, but it was a sweet sounding CD none the less.

I dont know what the mongrel above said, but if it like everything else that comes out of his blowhard jackass brain, take it with a grain of salt.
Kavi Alexander of waterlily acoustics uses the true systems precision 8 too,his chain is true systems>>>sound devices 722. I dont like the "color" of the preamp, but if someone with Golden ears is using a piece of gear...well...there you go. now that ive researched on it, a lot of critical(acoustic/classical/ world) music engineers use the true systems...guys that dont run signal through 5 layers of compression and 10 different effects boxes and and an L2. that sort of music is typically mics>>preamp>>converters>>recorder with minimal processing, so the preamp HAS to be HQ.

and all these guys like the true systems as well..http://www.true-systems.com/news.html

lets see....

Kavi Alexander + other golden eared engineers vs the opinion of cesscock(who?).

the choice seems obvious....

Geez, Ray, how many times you gonna edit that post to try to look cool? It's changed three times already.

how many times you going to post in support of chess, and/or suck his dick because I offend your sensitive ass? fuck you.

and I mean that only in the manner in which it was intended, cocksucker.

Thx, Big Ray

I think i am leaning toward the DAV BG No 2 (4channel). I got some prices back and it's sounds like a better buy for 4 channels. I may have to wait for my christmas bonus.

hey man, I am glad to help, good luck with your choice, whatever route you decide to take. any of the stuff mentioned will do fine, all we can do is chime in with our own experiences to help others along...

fwiw, I dont know if Mick's info is on his website, but his emails are mick@davelectronics.com OR davelectronics@tiscali.co.uk (if you contact him, email both addresses at once..he is a one man show and gets rather busy at times)..dont mess with a retailer,. they generally rob you blind. Go direct.

FYI, I am from NC too, and come nov 15, I am out of the army here in Germany and go back there for good. Cant wait(wilmington)

Hey BR ... I'm glad you, um, didn't know what I wrote in my post. But your powers of perception are pretty amazing. I mean, it's like you have me on ignore and all, but it was almost like you knew exactly what I said in my post.

If I didn't know any better, I would have swore you actually read my post. :D Which makes me very happy.

That's kind of hard to answer without really knowing ones' personal taste or the kind of stuff they're recording, budget, etc. Now if you're talking what I might recommend instead of the True Precision 8 ... heck, I'd say almost anything. The True is moreless a clean, straight-wire kinda' deal, so I might recommend the usual suspects ... a Sytek will give you four channels of quality gain. An Audio Upgrades modified Yamaha mla-7 would be a really good option for 8 channels in a single rack unit.

Also, when you get in to this price territory, you have to consider the idea of doing a lunchbox ala API or similar, if that's your bag. But really, in comparison to the Precision 8, I'd almost think you could get pretty close with something even in the budget range; M-Audio and Studio Projects both have respectable offerings, for example. A Mackie Onyx mixer would be a perfectly acceptable (pretty good, actually) alternative as well.

It has nothing to do with chessrock. You have some good product knowledge, but are basically a tool to anyone who disagrees with you.

Have a good day, Ray.

Wow, two replies to the same post.

Anyway, thanks for the negative rep and the swear words.

Hey, a couple weeks ago, you left me some negative rep for a post I made back in July. It's almost like you just wait until you can rep me again, and pick any random post to neg me on. Like clockwork, almost. ;)
You might want to check that out, it could be an obsession.

Like hijacking threads to try to burn chessrock. Who seems crusty, but not violent.

gcapel,

Sorry for contributing to the thread hijacking. Good luck with your purchase. I gotta say, I'm wanting to try a couple of those DAVs, if only to answer some questions for myself. They are priced well, and probably sound pretty good, time will tell if they are for me.

The nice thing about getting four vs. eight is that leaves you some flex to try some different things. The one thing about many of the pres mentioned here is they are pretty clean, the True, the DAVs, the ATI. Personally, when doing rock, I like something capable of some flavor for many of the instruments. Four clean channels and four of something else would give you plenty of flexibility.

I was in a band years ago. We always played @ bessie's in downtown wilmington. That was a very cool placed to play. I would love to live there.

Big Ray has some sort of agenda going on that he thinks he's keeping on the down low. Basically, he spends much of his days signing on to various discussion boards under different usernames and talks about how wonderful the DAV gear is.

I could be wrong about this, and maybe he just really likes the gear so much he can't stop talking about it. :D But to spend that much of your time talking about one product, without any personal stake in it ... would just be pretty damn weird. I mean there are a lot of products I like and use, but after about the 78th time mentioning it, I figure people "get it" already. In either case, I don't see how anyone could really take him very seriously. He's a strange cat, for sure.
