What's this I keep hearing about using 1/4" TRS insert jacks as direct outs? Can someone please explain this technique to me further? For some reason, I think this might only work with Mackie mixers; is that true? THanks.

the_man (huh?),

TRS is a 'stereo' jack. TRS stands for Tip-Ring-Sleeve (the 3 connections on the jack)
1/4" is the size... it's them 'normal' jacks.

The insert as direct out works when you plug the jack (TRS) halfway in through the first 'click' so the 'insert' signal will nog be broken. If you don't understand the insert theory at all, check the net or your manual.
it works on every board with inserts.

nuff info?

Insert theory? I know how inserts work (at a very high level) , is that what you mean?

great, then you shall have no problems understanding the TRS talk, right!

Well, beginning a sentence with "I know..." is usually the first step in me exposing myself as a complete moron.

At least I know where to come for help.

Thanks!

Well, I don't know about the trs theory, but I have used the inserts to get preamplified signals in my Spirit mixer a hundred times and I haven't had any problems yet.

The strange thing is that I dont put them "halfway", but the whole way in. I believe from what I've heard, that this way I get signal out but it blocks the signal for any other purpose (mains or auxes in the mixer, for example).

That's my experience only, I am not an experienced homereccer at all.

Hope this helps!

funny, flapo.

You just used it to do it the other way around.

While the_man was trying to understand how to get signals OUT of the inserts, you just used it to FEED the board via inserts.

If you would understand the physics of an insert-slot than you should know why you can plug it all the way in. But I do not expect you to ;)
(that was not ment to diss you in anyway, by the way)

As long as you know how to use it!!
(and you clearly do) Hope the_man does now to!

An insert has two channels. SEND and RECEIVE. It uses a cable with a Stereo jack that breaks out into two mono jacks. Each mono jack is the SEND and RECEIVE.

If you only want to send the signal and not receive it back then you plug a mono jack into the insert half way. This sends the signal but also lets the signal route through the rest of the mixer for monitoring.

a word of caution, some companies, like soundcraft in some cases do it backwards where ring is send and tip is return

also remember that these types of inserts with trs mean that your signal is unbalanced during this part of its travel, so keep it short and clear in this case

That fuckin pissed me off when I setup my Ghost with the RNCs. Now instead of just slapping in a balanced cable to my patchbay I have to go and resolder the jack or use a dual mono adapter.

Then that's why I make it work! Indeed, Spirit mixers are made by Soundcraft.
