Hi,
I'm quite new to recording via computer, so forgive my ignorance if I display it. My setup is quite basic: PC with XP, Terratec Phase 22 soundcard, Phillips mic, Cool Edit Pro 2, and regular PC speakers. The problem is that I don't know how to set up my sound so that I can monitor what the mic is picking up while playing back what's already recorded. It records fine, when you play back what's recorded it sounds great, but I can't hear it while i'm recording.

I went into the control panel for the sound card and saw an option for Analog out (which is what my speakers are connected to). This gives a drop-down menu of "Wave", "Analog In" (my mic) and "Digital In". Leaving this as "Wave" I can hear playback, when "Analog In" is selected it output's what the mic picks up.

What i'd like to know is how can I set it up to have both? Wave output and Analog In being outputted simultaneously.

Sorry about the long-windedness.

I think the soundcard is OK...

you're looking for a menu in Cool Edit to allow monitoring on playback. Sorry, I've never used it, so I don't know where to look. :(

perhaps..

I thought of that one, but I don't think it is, cos really the Audio In should be outputted when there isn't any playback as well. It's kind of annoying because I know it's able to process everything - input, recording the input, output etc. It just doesn't seem to want to output from two sources.

Not sure if this will work. Click the speaker in the lower right corner of your of the screen, choose options/properties, choose recording and place a check in mono out and wave out mix. Adjust the volume and give it a try.

Thanks for the feedback

No, i'm afraid I tried that one. When I installed my soundcard (which appears to work perfectly), the software installed a custom Control Panel, which makes the window's Volume control inactive. It doesn't allow me to place checks, they're all ghosted. However Wave and Mono Out are checked. I don't have a mixer Carter, do I need one for this? The soundcard can route the input sound out but I have to switch it off to allow me to switch back on the Wave out.
