Some free home-brewed beer (good stuff!) to anyone with the right solution:

Here's the hardware:

ASUS AN78XE-Deluxe motherboard, nVidia chipset.
1 gig 3200 DDR Memory
more HD space than you can imagine (IDE)
AMD Barton 2800 CPU
Crappy AGP 4x graphics card (Well, it was good in its day.. Matrox)
Win XP (all the updates)

Tascam US-122

Using CUBASE SE

Trying to record from my Chapman Stick (stereo instrument) into the US-122. I keep crashing with a BUGCODE_USB error... Sometimes I can actually play a few notes, other times it crashes immediately on entering CUBASE. I've tried all the varying ASIO drivers to no avail...

PLEASE HELP ME! My next step is to probably ditch the US-122 and try something different.

Thanx,

Michael in Texas

dam, i wanted that beer....

hmmm that problem sounds a bit more complicated than usual. Did you try downloarding the latest US122 drivers off of the tascam website? the USB problem sound more like a general thing rather than a Tascam specific thing, does all of your other USB gear work? do you always use the same usb port (i have to on mine)? How about unplugging any other USB device you don't need at the time ( i can't have my camera plugged in with the tascam). What buffer size are you using? maybe try raising it.

Latest drivers are being used for all components concerned... No problems with USB devices; I have tried using different ports/busses, single vs. multiple USB devices per bus, you name it...

Grrr....

Just a sugestion ,you can try to disconect some USB devices you dont need ( printer scanner etc. ) while recording . I believe the tascam 122 is only USB 1.1

What kind of midi stream does your Chapman Stick put out?

If I remember correctly, they put out HUGE amounts of midi data just for a single note - note number, velocity and six or eight different CC messages. Since it has ten or twelve strings and doesn't need to be plucked just pressed, you are probably producing a MASSIVE data stream for every gesture you try to record. USB 1.1 has serious limitations, and if your computer allows you may need to try a USB 2.0 or firewire interface to cope with the data stream.

Just out of curiosity, have you sucessfully sequenced using some kind of dedicated device as a recorder? Or any other computer setup?

Right now I'm just going directly out of the pickup into the guitar/line in (both L and R) of the US-122.. No MIDI was harmed in the making of this music.. :D

I have already unplugged *everything* USB related from the machine except for the US122.. I've tried plugging in to each separate USB bus/port ... I got semi-related hotfixes from microsoft... I offered sacrifices to the gods.

The odd thing is that I don't even have to DO anything... Sometimes the machine crashes with nothing attached to the US-122 after starting cubase. I suppose it could be a bad US-122, though I doubt it.

Oh, well... Maybe I'll replace it with the M-Audio Omni/66 combo PCI system and remove inherent USB issues altogether.

Good call.

Sometimes you just have to do what's right
