Recently I've had trouble tuning the Low-E string on my telecaster. I have (of course) changed strings and the problem persists. I'm relatively ignorant of tech-stuff -- so what could be causing this trouble? Note: the issue is not that the string de-tunes quickly; it's that I can't seem to get it properly in tune to begin with. It's always just *that little bit* off, or worse. Help???

Sounds like the intonation may be off for that string. Do you know how to adjust intonation?

You may need to have a guitar tech check your tuners to see if they are loose. After my Taylor got knocked off its stand by a little kid and faceplanted into a tile floor, I had horrible problems keeping it in tune. Took it to the shop and had the Taylor tech check it out. He tightened up the tuners a bit and I haven't had a single problem since.

Tele's

I mean no disrespect to your guitar knowledge when I ask this.......Are you sure you are not confusing the sometimes undefined low end tone of the tele for being out of tune?

I've played Fender's for over 25 years and have seen a few guitar players who are new to Tele's expect a tighter low end sound (low E string). They sometimes mistakely hear the guitar as out of tune.

Does your tuner show the guitar in tune or out?

Most likely, you need to get your guitar setup and strobe tuned (intontated). If, as you say, you are fairly ignorant of technical issues, take your guitar to a good repair tech, and have them do a setup. It is realitively simple, and relitively cheap (in my shop it would cost $75), and your guitar will come back BETTER than new (factory setups suck).
