Dammit, Jim, Shut Up!
These two seem to be the most desirable synths out there. I liked both when I demoed them in the store, but you don't really get to know a board until you own one for a while.

I like many of the sounds from both. I really like the Tritons touch screen feature. Having been a Roland user for some time, I am sick to death of navigating multiple menus that are laid out in non-intuitive fashion.

I'd really like to hear the pros and cons on each from people that own one or the other--or both. Are they similar or very different in the long run? What i want is a combination of killer real keyboard sounds--piano, Ele piano, organ, etc--real usable instrument sounds--guitar, brass, bass, orchestral--great drum kits---and incredibly useful pads and textures. Phat, of course!

Is there a clear winner? Or are they both incredible?

triton is the best imo...

i have a triton--- it makes making music fun, fast, and a breeze, i use a mpc 2000xl as a seqencer, but the triton as many exp. cards to buy and the os is the fastest on the market.

just my 2 pennies.

Motif. the rom sounds are almost unparalleled on any rom synth out there. very phatt and expressive pianos and strings. and with a bigger sampler than the triton which is what i would suggest you'd use for guitar...
and even though t-hart may think the triton is more expandable, it's not... the motif has loads of expansion options, not only rom but also real analogue and modular synthesis... you also have great effects onboard including the ever neccesary compression for the drum tracks...

Well Ive owned both boards before, and currently I have stuck with the Triton for the simple fact of its easy navigation and more realistic instruments. The Motif has a great sequencer and stuff too, but the touch screen just shuts down the Motif's. The strings in the Motif were ok, but the seemed to have more realistic instruments; the Motif is really good for other sounds; not really the piano and such, but more synthy sounds. The Triton, however can't compare when it comes to the special effects on board. What Im trying to say is, its really what you're into. If you look on stage at many live concerts, you'll see a Triton before the Motif. Also understand that the Motif is not that old of a product, therefore it may be the best board to get for the simple fact that Triton sounds are heard damnear everywhere in Hip Hop and R&B; so lets be different people. Plus the Motif has a totally better way to get real sounding guitar out of a workstation, WHOA!!!!! that was a lot huh?

Peace!

Hmmm...they both sound pretty fantastic. I went out and played with both for a while today and found them to both have many excellent sounds. O got carried away for a while with the electric pianos in the Motif. Wow! Like the best vintage Wurly and Suitcase Rhodes I 've ever heard. Very warm and full sounding. The Triton was more intuitive to navigate than the Motif, which is actually important when you want to work fast.

Are these expansion boards for these synths RAM expanders or actual sound modules? I read that tyhe Motif can have 64 megs of ram for the sequencer while the Triton can have 96. I'd prefer that 96 megs of space.

This synth will be used for a lot of things--everything from orchestral to pop, to techno and hip hop--maybe even some country and rock tracks. So I suppose i want a mixture of real and synthesized timbres. I would like some 'real' drum sounds and some modern style kits. I guess versatility is going to be a big selling point for me.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Could you exand on the sampler/guitar comments any? Whats this Motif way of getting real guitar sounds? I'm curious. I wish I could afford both!

Hey Crawdad....

.....Ive been doing alot of research on the two as well for a x-mas purchase. Here's a couple of cents worth.

I read that tyhe Motif can have 64 megs of ram for the sequencer while the Triton can have 96.

...Do you mean sampling space? If so, I think youre reffering to the Triton Studio.

Ive put the Triton classic out of the way as far as choices go. To me, the sounds available on the motif outweigh the utility ease available on the triton classic. ...and those sounds are something else too.
So, Ive narrowed it down to the 2 contenders:
Im seriously considering the Studio for a few reasons. I currently use a stand-alone recorder, so having the use of the cdr for saving, and loading is really easy and time efficient. I like the 96 meg. expandable range of memory for sampling. I was also jazzed w/ the new stereo grand sound on the studio. Ive always liked the one on the motif, and the studio's is just as nice (IMHO). I like the dig. I/O's available on the motif and studio (not avail. on the classic). The big +'s for the Motif are PRICE!!!!, the much better sequencer resolution (not being a sequ. savy, Im not sure exactly how evident this is when actually listening), and .......... PRICE!!!(did i mention that?:) )

For the time being, I will be using the sequencer on the board for drums etc. Any info in this regard would be very helpful.

BTW: So far, Ive got the 61 key studio beat down to $2359, and the Motif down to $1460......for anyone interested.

much thanks, G

The decision to go with the Motif would be a no brainer for me.

Once you get past the fact that Korg sounds are all effects and see that the raw waveforms are basically crap, the Motif is much more appealing.

If you turn off the Triton's arpeggiator and FX processors, it is really an unimpressive $2000 silver plastic box...

I like to slightly digress here if anyone does not mind...

Howmany direct outs does the Motif and Triton have? That is howmany analog outs can I get out for mixing? I am hoping it's not just 1 stereo pair out for all those instruments.

Howmany SPDIFs?

THanks in advance.

i like the motif. because the sounds are different than what you hear on the radio all day.for rap and r/b triton and mpc is what you hear and find at most any pro studios with that as a base clientele. and the triton at most any. i like the fact the motif has the track buttons in the same fashion as the e-mu mp7 too. for me it makes it easir to work.keep in mind i have the karma now tho so i have the triton sounds on that and might be biased because i'd want different sounds 2 go with it.would never get rid of the karma tho
