Hi all,
How do i hookup via midi;
K2000[controller plus use internal sounds], MPC3000, MOTU 828mkII[midi and firewire], PC[firewire].
I want to use the k2000 as my controller for it's intewrnal sounds and the sounds from vsti on pc, use the sequencer from pc software like sonar or tracktion or, should i use mpc sequencer. MPC has 4 midi outs, 2 midi ins.

Let's get this set up first. The first thing to do is look in the K2000 manual under 'Local off' - then go to the keyboard and follow the directions for turning the local control off. This will break the connection between the keyboard and the sounds inside, and will make sequencing possible without note looping or other irritating problems. Plug the midi out of the K2000 into the midi in on the 828mkII. Then plug the midi out of the 828 into the midi in of the K2000. Next, plug the midi thru of the K2000 into the MPC3000.

The MPC has a good pattern-based sequencer and I used an MPC2000 as my main stage engine for years, but the good thing about computer software is it's much quicker to arrange, rearrange and re-rearrange until you get the song just right. I use Tracktion, and version 2 just came out and comes with a bunch of VST fx and VSTi's for an almost unbelievable price. I love the 'everything on one screen' and the speed with which you can put together a whole song. Here's a link to it, or download the demo version here

Thanks man,
I also have a 4inX8out midi patch bay for my other modules.
Should i go MPC-> patch bay in
I think tracktion looks crazy!!
thanks for helping man

In the configuration I posted the MPC will function as a midi module, meaning the sounds will be available to use over midi.

If you want to control sounds from the pads plug it into one of the midi inputs on your patch bay, then switch it manually to have the MPC input to the computer.

And you're welcome!

wassup ssscientist,
For some reason i didn't get email notice of your reply with this so i didn't think there would be anymore help but i was wrong. Thank you again for your help as i am trying this right now. I will get back to you.
Again thank you (you could have been doing something else instead of helping my dumb ass :p )

when you say "switch it manually" do you mean tha i have to take the midi cable from the mpc out-> 828 midi in

No - just change the slider on the Kawai Midi patcher from A for the keyboard to B for the MPC with the computer plugged into one of the 8 outputs...

Do i still hook everything up this way even with the patch bay?
p.s. i picked up tracktion2 and it is nice

My setup is; k2k midi->(motu 828mkII)midi->(k2k)midi thru->(mpc3ooo)midi->(4in x 8out chan[a] midi pacth bay)midi 1-8->(modules).

How should i have it if i want the mpc to get the sounds from the k2k?
Should i backup and go(motu 828 mkII)midi->(chan patch bay)midi->(k2k)
thanks again for your help on this one :eek:
p.s. I have tracktion runnig

I was suggesting a chain like this:

K2K + MPC midi outs both as masters on the midi patcher. Then, from output number one on the midi patcher to the 828. From the midi out of the 828 to the midi input of the K2k, then the thru from the K2k as a third master input. Then hook up the midi in of the MPC to one of the outputs on the midi patcher and do the same with your other modules.

If you want to trigger the sounds from the K2k from the MPC pads, just make the MPC the master on the midi patcher. Here's the trick to set the midi channels in Tracktion2 - you need to make sure that both the midi clip and the track are addressed to your 828 interface and both on the correct channel before you will hear midi notes as they are played.
