triggering sounds???

Hi, Im fairly new to the recording biz but Im staying pretty busy with my new 002 protools rig. Im wondering if any Pro-tools users out there could give me advice on how to trigger sounds from example a snare drum track, without using sound replacer...

Is there a way to do this? Some sort of plug-in or midi controlled device?

Do I have the gear to do it?..Help please...thanks

Take a look at SampleTank and Reason. Both should have came with your 002. You just run your midi channel to an aux channel and place the Sampletank or Reason plugin on that channel. Then you need to get Reason up and running and plan out all the samples in there. Then you just trigger them from PT.

Thanks for the tip! I was wondering if Reason could help me with this. The only problem is that I cannot run audio out of Protools and Reason at the same time...Is this a problem for using this method?

You won't be running audio out of reason and PT at the same time. When both of them are running and you have your Aux set up in PT, reason is just acting like any other plugin. All plugins are just programs running in the background. The MIDI notes are just triggering the sounds in Reason and it's sending it to PTs aux channel and coming out your main speakers. Try it and see. What you'll need to do though is create a new file in Reason where you load up your drum samples and all and get it ready. I think you might have to do something in the track window in Reason as well...but I can't really remember. I might be just imagining things or thinking of something else. Oh, and I think you have to set the outputs or inputs of Battery to the digi as well. Sorry that this is so vague. I hardly ever do drum samples.

Also, you might check out Battery. It's a drum sampler plugin that works well too.

triggering sounds

Thanks so much for the help! I did what you said and got Reason working together with protools. Only one problem...when I begin running both programs at the same time my computer wants to freeze up on me. Im running a Mac G4 with a 1.25 gig processor and a seperate 80 Gb harddrive, so I know the computer can handle it....what could be wrong?

Any help much appreciated

Also, on the same lines as the earlier question about triggering....Lets say you record a snare track that you just end up hating and want to replace it but do not have sound replacer.....Can audio trigger a midi signal in Reason? or is there another way to do it?

Try starting Pro Tools first and then open reason....OR start Reason first and then open Pro Tools. When I've done it on a G5 one way froze the computer up when the other one worked. Can't remember which one though.

As far as the second question...are you saying that you've recorded a real drum sound and hated the snare sound and want to replace it with a sample from a sampler or synthesizer??? An easy way to do this is either take the sampled snare hit or record a MIDI synth's snare as audio and replace all of the hits on your snare channel. Or just on a MIDI track line up the note for a snare where every hit is on the snare audio track...then just record the snare down to audio Hope this helps.

Awesome.....I will try the method you said about starting Reason first of vise versa.....Also.....if I wanted to replace my crappy snare track with a sampled one.....is there an easier way to locate each snare transient and drop the sampled snare there than to paste one at each location....that seams quite time consuming....

I was also thinking of just bussing the snare track to an aux which contained a "snare" plug-in.......I just dont have a snare plug-in...any recommendations?

And dont let me harp on the snare track, thats just an example..id like to sometimes replace kicks, toms....everything

well here's a couple ways...if your beat doesn't already line up with the grid you have selected (ie. you didn't use a click track to record your band), you need to do so now. you can use a combination of identify beat and time compression/expansion to get it to fit along the grid. you're gonna have to experiment with that one or ask someone else, 'cause i'm not 100% positive on this one. I've done it before, but can't remember how. Or...if you have 6.4 you can do a tab to transient. Get to the beginning of your snare track and up in the timeline area there is a tool called tab to transient. It's a pic of an arrow pointing at a transient. Therefore, every time you press tab it will go to the next transient (or it's supposed...sometimes it's hard for it to find it, but it does a pretty good job still). I like this feature in PT. Then just paste the new one there. Good luck.
