When you trigger drums, is the only way to turn the trigger's signal into a midi signal to use a drum 'brain'?

I was interested in triggering the kick drum and maybe toms, and now that sonar 2 comes with all these sampling dxi's like cyclone, I think its called, it seems like I have everything I need but a couple of triggers. The only problem is converting what comes out of the trigger into a midi signal.

I was looking for a cheap drum trigger to MIDI converter recently and ended up with the Roland TMC-6. Music123 has it for $209 and Guitar Center will match the price.

It has 6 drum trigger inputs and can store 12 different patches. Each patch defines the midi note number, threshold, sensitivity, etc assigned to each drum trigger input. Very handy.

It only does the trigger to MIDI conversion, does not have an onboard sound library, but it sounds like you don't need one.

Hope this helps.

if you want really cheap, you can go with Paia.

You can also pick up some old Kat midi brains for little money, and also the Alesis D4 and D5.

There are also some free vst plugins that actually trigger samples from your audio inputs:

Try it, but I don't know if that's flexible enough.

Of course some more knowledgeable people will suggest many more options. Those are the ones I remember now.

Are you wanting to do this live or in the studio? In the studio you don't need to trigger the samples because in most DAWs you can set a threshold on the track to trigger midi notes.

The latency on a softsynth would most likely be too long for playing live and you would need a hardware sampler for drum sounds.

drumagog RULES!!!

now if there were only a public ftp where we could trade samples!
Anytime someone comes in with a good drumset, I sample them drummagog style, 8 levels of velocity then again then again for 8 velocity x 3 random for all 24 hits. Rim at drumagog was talking about setting up a user ftp, I hope he goes thru with it

I have yet to purchase it, but it is definately on the list of gotta haves.

The plugin idea seems like the best, this is for the studio, but not all the time, just as an effect for stuff like techno drum sounds in the bridge or something. Fruityloops is cool for it, espiecially with the new syncing options, but its always cooler to have a real drummer to play a hip-hop style kit.

Thanks a lot, i gotta check this stuff out!
