Trigger question

The other week I went to the studio to watch my friends band get recorded. I noticed the engineer did not use the real kick drum sound but instead used it as a trigger for a sampled or midi sound.
It seemed like a pretty good idea to me and would probably make my recordings sound better.
How would I go about doing something like that? This guy was not using a special trigger, just a regular mic.
 
The mic is probably creating a midi note which he then is going back and using the notes to trigger an audio sample of a bass kick thru a software sampler.
 
can someone enlighten me with dat technique......
cos i dun have access to record live drums... been usin midi and samples but still havent found dat i like
 
I often use this technique

kick drum -/- mic or trigger -/- DM5 triggers input -/- DM5 MIDI out -/- Soundcard midi in -/- CubaseSX midi track.

Then I can do what ever I want with this kick. (I alway record the midi AND the audio of the kick)

Heavy metal bands love this :D
 
if youre on a pc skip the ddrum/d-4/dm-5/dm-pro/FORAT thing and just go www.drumagog.com

whatever you got on tape you can trigger with ( velocity triggers)
AND itll also output a midi note if you want
 
With the d4/dm-5/dm-pro a.s.o. you can as well trigger from an already recorded track - so it really depends on your favorite recording/mixing tool... I think the dm pro can even use sampled sounds to be triggered. I own a d4, but haven't yet used this technique... (Might try on my actual song, though!)
