I have trigger finger and I'm hoping it can be fixed..It's my pinky finger on my fret hand and I can only open it like half way. Trigger Finger Has anyone else here had this condition? If so, how was it delt with? I'm kinda freakin out!!

Yup. Middle finger right hand. Had a steroid injection initially. Only a temporary fix. Had surgery a couple months later. Outpatient with local anesthesia. Took 3-4 months for it to feel right although the incision heals up pretty fast. Works perfectly now. If it is locking up bad, I'd probably just cut to the chase and have surgery instead of trying an injection again.

Oh good, so I gather you're finger is back to normal now. I'm soo glad to hear this, I thought it might be something where if I had the surgery it might not work like it used too. I heard of one story where the guy had pins put into his finger to straighten it out and his finger is still in constant pain after like 3 months. Thanks for th reply, and easing my mind a bit..

Oh yeah, another question is, did you have to quit playing your guitar for a couple of months? Or could you pick it up a couple of weeks after surgery?

Thanks again,

Well, it was my picking hand so I could play fairly soon after surgery, although finger picking using my middle finger took a couple months before it was reasonabley decent. This is not to say that this kind of surgery is always complication or risk free, but it is certainly possible (and I'd say highly likely) to have a good outcome. At this point, my hand works perfectly and I have virtually no visible scar. The incision itself was only about 3/4" long. I had my procedure done in an outpatient surgery center with just local anesthesia. No sedation. Drove myself there and drove myself home. Took just about three hours overall - most of it waiting around.

If you are thinking about having something done with your hand, see an orthopedist who is a hand specialist - not a general practice orthopedist. Orthopods subspecialize and take additional training (fellowships) in these areas. Hand surgery is one of those areas. You want someone who is board certified. I'm an attorney who represents health care providers and lots of physicians and I'm picky about who I use for medical care.

Great, thanks for the info...you rock! I have made an appointment with a hand surgeon for May 2'nd. I am actuaally looking foreword to getting this fixed. I will be sure to ask him wether he thinks a steroid shot will help or if we should just go straight to the surgery option. Again, I appreciate your help!

Well I finally had the surgery about 2 months ago. Turned out it was'nt trigger finger but something called Dupytrens Contracture. It is where extra tissue grows in the palm areas of the hand close to the fingers(mine actually went up the finger aalmost to the tip). They ended up cutting my pinky from the tip of the finger to about a 1/2" down the palm. They removed most of the extra tissue that they could. He said it was wrapped around the nerve like a snake so he had to leave some of it in there. Now my pinky finger is almost completely straight.

I had it in my thumb years ago. It hurt like hell. When I'd bump it, it would trigger into one position and felt like it was being twisted off. Had to 'unlock' it which hurt like hell too. I had a cortezone shot into the knuckle of it. Went away but had it again a year or so later. I never had surgery. Haven't had it in years. Horrible pain that I wouldn't wish on anyone.
