Returned from the dead
I didn't really know what forum to post this in and since the newbies forum is sort of a general knowledge area I figured it would be OK to post it in here. Mods if you wanna move it that's fine.

Ok, so I got my PC in a separate room to cut down on noise (thank god :D) and I've got all my cables run to where they need to go except for my monitor cables. My AI output is balanced but unfortunately the 1/4" inputs on my monitors are unbalanced. So In order to keep the benefits of a balanced signal I need something that would take the balanced signal and convert it to unbalanced right before it hits the monitors so that way I can make my unbalanced cable run as short as possible.

So what I'm obviously gonna need is a transformer but I'm not sure if there is another component that I would need to keep the benefits of the balanced signal. Would a in-line transformer do the job or would I need something else?

Hello..Try an " Ebtech Line Level Shifter".. Works great and don't degrade the signal..!.. Good luck..

How about an upgrade........ and get new *balanced in* monitors

Definitely in my future... but not for a while... I'm thinking KRK Rokit 5's (as long as they don't need a separate sub)
Just looking for a fix in the mean while ;)

Just wanted the mention that the rokits get pretty low but not all the way to the real rumbly stuff. Good luck. I need to go learn more about transformers and other electronic components. I SUCK in that regard!

UNbalanced monitor inputs...?

What monitors are we talking about here...?

Crappy ones :(

When I first started this whole studio thing it seemed that they were a good choice... Unfortunately I had next to no Idea what I was doing.
Right now it's damage control until I pick up a good pair of monitors.

Apart from hum elimination these also covert balanced to unbalanced or unbalanced to balanced.

Cheers

Alan.
