My friend wants a second Akg C1000 for an overhead. He'll trade me his AT 3525 for it. I mainly record vocals and acoustic guitars. Based on any of your experiences with these mics, does it sound like a good trade for me?

Thanks

I haven't heard the c1000 but I have the 3525 and like it alot.Seeing it's a friend of yours why don't you see if you can borrow the 3525 for a day or two and try it out? Then you'll be able to decide if you like it more than the c1000s.

On a purely monetary level, the 3525 sells for a few more dollars than the c1000.

You'd probably be pretty happy with the 3525 for vocals and acoustic guitar, and your friend would do pretty well with two c1000's as overheads. Could be a win/win trade.

Trying it out first is a great idea.

At $150, the 3525 is a pretty good value IMO. I have a c1000 and a 3525. On certain voices the 3525 works better than my 4033! And I still like the way MY voice sounds through a c1000. Of course, it all comes down to the answer that comes up from Harvey and others: "It depends" on what you want/like, and every other variable (sound of the source, the room, rest of the mix, etc.)

In a nutshell, this sounds like a good trade, but the best answer is to try it out in as many situations as possible first.

They can both useful mics in dif situations. The 3525 is not the best you can do for $150. That would be the v67. Its good on percussion, on snare, interesting on acoustic guitar though I rarely use it for that. It can be great on some voices. Its relatively flat with a little bit of presence at around 2.5k. The big thing about it is its extended low end. Its deep and can be great on a low vox that is reinforcing a higher vox in a mix. The C1000 is ok, not horrible but theres alot around now that you would be better off with for the same money like an ecm8000 or 603 or for a couple of $$ more an sm81. Alternatively, wait till the studio projects B series comes out, theyll probably change the $100 mic landscape forever.

I brought up the going rate for the 3525 to illustrate that the 3525 is actually selling for less than the c1000 now.Jager is not going to buy either of these mics,he already has one and is thinking of trading it for the other. Jager, I think you would be happy with the trade but you really should try out the 3525 first to see how it fits your applications.
