I've been hacking on this for quite some time now. I was using Cakewalk 7.0, and was trying to record a guitar track while listening to the drum track (for reference. When I was done and listened to the guitar track, the drum track got recorded onto the guitar track, and the more I record, the more it starts to snowball, and the result is just terrible to the ears.
I once owned a Fostex 8-track HD, I was able to hear without it bleeding into the tracks.

I just recently got Powertracks 5.0, and I still have the same problem.

Somebody pleeeeze help this poor soul.

What input method are you using for the guitar? Mic, pickup, pick-up and pre-amp etc.? And are you using headphones to monitor your drum track while recording the guitar track?

My setup is as follows,

Guitar processor/Mic/Roland PMA going into a 4 track recorder (only used to get the signal into the PC), 4 track to the Aux-input on the soundcard,

When I record, I use headphones/speakers coming out from output on the soundcard or the mixingboard.

The software used are Cakewalk or Powertracks Proaudio. When I record something, let's say guitar... I should be able to turn off the input for the tracks I want played back when I record the guitar. I figured muting the drums, and then recording the guitar would work, but you can only hear the guitar now, and I don't have any reference as to how fast the song is...

Don't mute the drums. That's your click track. Really helpful to have.
You should be able to hear both but only record the new signal to a new track as long as the input is isolated. You need to have only the guitar picked up by the mic. Lose the speakers during recording.

i think your problem lies in your soundcard , because i have the same problem with my el cheapo soundcard... what soundcard are you using ? i know that in widows somewhere theres a check box to turn off monitoting while you record or something , but i cant remember where exactly .. i cant record multiple tracks w/o them all ending up jumbled onto one track...and i think your having the same problem..

man i am no expert but it seems ive had this problem before as well. It may be so simple that your overlooking one little thing? do you have your computer microphone muted? i may be wrong, but thought I'd give my two cents
