What is the most entry-level Roland VS machine that will track 8 inputs simultaneously, and how many of these 8 inputs are XLR, phantom powered? I've looked at Korg D1600 and Yamaha AWG units, but before I pull the trigger, I'd like to here from the Roland camp. I don't need a CD burner or on-board FX. I need 8 tracks at 16bit non-compressed. Is the VS1680, or VS1880 what I need?

Oops. I didn't see you wanted non-compressed.

I think it is the 1680. You get two phantom-powerd xlrs, and 6 1/4" balanced jacks.

I'm pretty sure you can track 8 inputs at once on the VS-2000, which I own. It can track at 16 and at 24bits.

Thanks guys, I keep checking features on all these machines and it seems like most of the manufacturers kinda skate on that information as long as they can. I mean what good is 2 in, 8 out anyway? You can't even record off a 4 sub console with that. It seems like most of these boxes are geared to the solo performer tracking one instrument at a time. Do the preamps and converters really add that much cost to a unit? The lowly four track cassette offered more recording power.

Roland vs Korg vs Yamaha vs ete ete ete

Roland seems to have the better operating system and ease of operation. I have played around with all three of these brands lately and have found that the Roland beats the others hands down on just about everything from sound quality to ease of use right out of the box. Roland cost more but then again you pay for what you get (better quality/better built/more capabilities). I just got my VS-2480 and it is a dream to use and also it has money making possibilites that I fully intend to explore. Just like buying anything, go for the most bang your buck will buy.

fostex vf16 records 8 at once in 20 bit. 2 xlr/phantom + inserts/1/4"unbalanced and then 6 more unbalanced ins. lightpipe and spdif and all that good stuff. got an old one on ebay (because like you i didn't need a cd burner or effects) for $300!

theres even a cheaper way if you want...if you dont mind using your computer to record.
Go to ebay and find someone selling a SI-24 PRO PACK .
If its the "pro" it will come with a rpc-1 card.
Usually on ebay for the whole package...$450.00

Or if you can only find the si-24 itself w/o the card...go to 192K.COM and order the ESI audioterminal 010 soundcard for $329.00

A rough total...$450 - $700 bucks for 8 XLR inputs with phantom power, 6 analog outputs and digital I/O-all with 24-bit/96kHz sound quality.
O..and did i mention...its got motorized faders!

I own this exact setup..and it rocks...just a thought :D

Cheapest SHOULD be VS890... It has 8 Tracks in MAS mode, which is 44.1 16Bit uncompressed, but NO XLR You'll need external pres for every condenser, with 2 channels somehow converted to SPDIF. VSR880 should work too, has 8 inputs, but no mic pres at all in, so you'd need a mixer or so, too.

You might ask over at VSplanet.com... I don't own the 890, onl the 880ex which can't do 8 tracks uncompressed...
