Track transfers from HD24 to Cubase SX

I have a question for you regarding the Alesis HD24. How difficult is it to move data to a computer (for editing in Cubase SX) and back to the Alesis. The HD24 is not as expensive as I thought they might be. I'm considering taking the plunge and investing in this system and a good analgue mixing board. Sooo...if I wanted to record in the Alesis and move the tracks into Cubase and back into the Alesis after editing for the final mix through a mixer...are there any issues with keeping the tracks sync'd up? How do you accomplish this? Does it work well for you? Do you have to do this one track at a time? Using the Roland VS880EX, I've tried moving audio from system to system before and I alway seem to get "something" slightly out of sync and it never sounds like it did in the orignal mulitracker....even using a sound wave generated on all tracks as a visual reference.

Maybe explaining your process in a detailed way of how you accomplish the tracktransfer would be good.

Thanks,
Simmons

Cubase SX <---> RME Hammerfall 16 ch lightpipe I/O <---> HD24

The Hammerfall card also uses the Alesis Sync to keep everything sample-accurate...

Simple as that!

Another way to do it...

Use the ethernet abilities the HD24 has to FTP the tracks, wave or aiff, to your PC. Then import them into whatever software you use. I use Nuendo so I don't forsee issues with Cubase. The tracks will line up with no problem. Once you edit them create a new song on the adat with a new name and FTP them back. They will line up and be ready for playback. If you have a soundcard with three lightpipe inputs you can transfer the way Bruce does and it will be in real time vs about 25 - 40 min my way. Also if you want to FTP wave files make sure the adat firmware is at least version 1.6 I think. The machines wouldn't FTP waves with the first firmware release.

nwsoundman...you said:

Are you saying no other action/procedure is required to sync up the tracks once they are imported to Cubase? They line up automatically in Cubase after the import and vice versa when you go back to the Alesis unit?

Doesn't this limit you to only 16 channels to import the data into the PC? How do you handle the other 8 tracks?

I transfer up to 16 at a time... no big deal... there's a 24-channel version too, I just didn't need the additional I/O, so I saved and went with the 16-channel I/O...

MOre often than not, I'm dealing with only up to 8-tracks at a time for editing, so it's not a problem...!

All the tracks will have the same start, end times and be the same length so if you import them and start them at 00:00:00 sec they will line up. I am not good at explaining things in writing so I hope I don't confuse you. When your done editing the files "bounce" them. Bouncing in Nuendo creates a BWF and I then convert it to just a .wave and send them back to the adat.

ethernet cable will work fine with ftp. The only bitch is its too damn long .It can take 35 minutes for a 24 track transfer.I did it and said forget it.I bought the motu 2408 mkIII. you can get deals on the 2408 mkII,all day long. It great as its a real time transfer. You have to set up a 24 track templete in Sonar and I assume the same would be true in Cuebase but I cant say for sure. Tracks will line up fine either way.
