When I'm playin back my drum machine tracks and am recording a bass part, or drums and bass playback and recording a guitar,.......how can I get the volume way up on what I'm recording in relation to the other tracks so I can hear what I'm doing ? If I turn down the master will that work or do I need to remix everything at a way lower level ? Duhhhh

What are you playing the tracks back through?

I play back through a mixer, so I just adjust the level on the mixer channels that I've designated for playback ( you do that in Cool Edit ).

I run my inputs ( 1 at a time ) through a mixer for recording, and monitor the soundcard output ( don't laugh ) SB 512 through a home stereo reciever and headphones.

You need to be able to turn up the output from the soundcard.

Sometimes soundcards give you an option - mine, for instance, lets me choose -10 dBV or +4 dBU (the second one's louder).

Usually though you use the mixer to adjust playback volume. Can you adjust anything on the stereo receiver to boost the volume through the headphones?

No problem turning up the Sony's to near death experiance, but I need to turn down existing tracks so I can monitor the instrument I am recording so I can hear IT above the rest of the mix.
Just remix after the track is done I guess and move on to the next, doing the same....?
