I originally posted this on the newb server board, but thought maybe I might get more input here. I have decided to go with the DAW approach but i am not that skilled in computers and I am realy a total beginner.

Here is the original post.

Hello all,
I am new to the forum and new to recording in general, but ready to learn. I have been playing guitar for years and just picked up the base. I have a band that I play with (two guitarists, one bassist, and a drummer). Three of us sing and I am mostly the rhythm guitar.
I have written several songs, some for the band, some for myself and I want to be able to record them. I also have several acoustic songs.
I have used cakewalk some and recorded directly to my soundblaster live card though the mic input on the comp for some acoustic stuff, but without a preamp the vocals blow and it sounds crappy. I basically just used this to practice riffs and set up song progressions, but I am ready to expand.
My equiptment is as follows... I play though a crate dx212 digital amp with tons of onboard effects, all controlled through a midi footswitch. We have a crate CPM8FX mixer / PA system with 8 inputs that the band plays through. I bought an STaudio DSP 2000 c-port 10 input sound card from a friend a while back but never got it working on my comp (I think because i didn't have dedicated monitors from this and it doesn't like rerouting back through your computer). I also recently bought a Dell 8600 laptop for my wife that I thought I could use.
My delimma is many fold. First, what computer to use? I can't use my Staudio input device with my laptop as it comes off it's own sound card. and my desktop is not an option due to location. Do I buy another desktop and dedicate it to my recording, or buy a new input device with firewire or usb and use my laptop? I was initially leaning towards the laptop but now maybe a dedicated desktop, I think I could get an acceptable comp for several hundred bucks and I have an extra video monitor already.
Next, I have to look at monitor speakers, and I have been looking at a LOT of posts about this. These have been quite helpful and I at least know what i need to go listen to and try out now.
Lastly, what else do I need? I just know I am going to be ther guy who starts stupidly and spends a lot of dough on stuff that I can't end up using so I thought I would beg for a little advice here.
Thanks so much for thaking the time to read this rather long winded post =) and thanks for any helpful insights!!

By the way, I was hoping to spend $500-600 on the comp and the same on the monitors.

Thanks again all!!! :)

Hey, gratefool1.

I'd call these guys and see what they'd recommend for a PC to go with your soundcard.

In that monitor price range, I'd consider the Event TR6s or TR8s. The Yorkvilles are popular on this board, too.

Well, at that price point you will most likely have to roll your own.

Here are the components you will need to throw together-
  • Case. I have just built one PC with this case, and have ordered two more. Quiet, cool, and on sale. $20
  • Motherboard, processor (Athlon XP 2800+ retailed), and memory. Bundled and tested. I would recommend an ASUS A7N8X-VM/400 board with integrated video (you can buy an external video adapter later if you wish), 512MB of RAM on a single stick, and don't forget to have the vendor assemble and test the components for an additional $9. Well worth it. $279
  • CDRW/DVD and HDD. Grab a Lite-On and a Western Digital 80GB Ultra-ATA. $47 and $63 respectively.
  • Cables. The motherboard comes with all you need, but ignore them and spring for 2 of these. Use one to hook up the HDD on the primary IDE bus, and use the other to hook up the CDRW/DVD on the secondary IDE bus. $18
  • Keyboard and mouse. I have had good luck with this wireless Microsoft combo. $49
  • Monitor. Here is a nice Viewsonic for $153.

Total cost, $629 plus tax (in CA.) and shipping. Plug and play, rock and roll!!

Wow

Wheelma.... that is about awesome! Thanks, I will look up all of those components when I get home tonight. Thanks all for the input, I really appreciate it ;)

Oh yeah...

I forgot to mention that I have a video monitor already. My budget is actually pretty flexible... I just don't want to go too far overboard as I am just getting started. If there is any other equiptment deemed "essential" or almost so  please let me know. Thanks again for such great responses!!

Well, if you already have a video monitor, use the $150 and get the M-Audio Audiophile 2496.

When checking out monitors, make sure you at least look at the M-audio BX-8's. I just picked up a pair from Music123.com, and I love them. 479.99

Just a suggestion,
Mumbus

2nd that emotion. Mixing got easier with my BX8s (couldna gottn harder).
