Total separation on cymbals - piezos or what?

Someone in this thread asked, "why is this isolation needed in a live situation" and I did not see an answer. Please, what is the purpose for doing this?

Its for processing using Max/msp, in a live free jazz situation. The cymbal resonances are driving a processing chain.

He's using the sound as a trigger for other things.

I record the cymbals from underneath with AT4041s 3 hihat and right and left cymbals.
Microphone pointed up and the drums in the null area. EQ and all is great! Try it.

Hi hat from an electric kit. Then hook up the trigger to the midi.
