Read "All You Need Is Ears" by George Martin (Beatles) available at your public library.Full of good info,shows how a producer shapes a raw sound to a finished product.

Tool on MTV? King Crimson? Riiight. Youre making sense now. Slipknot? MTV? Sepultura? Machine Head? Amen? Glassjaw? Cold? Deftones? At The Drive In? Please. If you have a point, make it, but dont just run off some crap cause you have nothing to back yer point. I have NEVER seen any of those bands on MTV, save Deftones, who are finally gettin some due.
 
Go ahead and add Nothingface to David Botrill's list for mixing credits on 'Violence.' I know you know who Nothingface is since they play em all the time on MTV since their music is just 'pop rock' right?
