The bass? Thanks... but it still has that horrible hiss in the track... I'll try to remove it with your fav program (Cool Edit)...
If it's hiss that's buggin' ya'...yeah, try to remove it. I really like the bass track. All my bass tracks sound like mud, but I'm pretty familiar with cooledit, and it' you're gonna' use it, you might try this. I'm assuming you've already compressed the bass... (since it always wins the "most likely to be compressed" award in my tunes). First, hard limit it to about -.5db. THEN, run a filter over it to kill everything above 10K, THEN do the noise or hiss reduction. You probably are miles ahead of me, but this order seems to gimme' the most reduction with the fewest artifacts.

BTW - I appreciate the hint on verbing the drum tracks during the chorus of my last song. It worked out perfectly, and it was easy.

Thanks,
Chris

well... I got 14 minutes...

Sorry to say there's been only 5hrs to work on this in the past three days... After posting the first bump to this thread, it was 11pm Wed nite and bedtime... Got up Thursday at 4:30, went to the gym, then to work for 11hrs (!) got home after dark (6:30)... couldn't sing worth a poop... but tried until 7:30pm... managed some meager BGVs... then, got into the mix and found out what's making it sound bad (PS: It ain't the bass  )

By the time I was done tweaking and adding tracks (with no new vox, cuz the voice wasn't happenin'...) I came up with a much better mix IMO... VBR this time...

.... but not a lot of work on production :o I'm gonna get a paddlin'... :(

Sunshine, r1

Now, please rip that mix up :D It's still a roughie; still some cool FX to throw in there, but IMO the levels are almost done as well as EQ... t'anks y'all :)

And here's proof that the bass sound wasn't bad.

thanks

JMarcomb It's so cool to have you reply to my stooopid tooons :) Your stuff is awesome, and I would sit at your feet just to learn. Sunshine is definitely a bass-driven toon... maybe that's why it feels like it needs some "meat" in the mix? heavier guits might work... but in this toon, they only seem to work as accents  And yes, there are plenty of mistakes

EricHenry U.S.A.

They are LM4, 1st version  but they are Wizoo sets... bought some new hats & cymbals sounds, but haven't put them in yet... these will get better... the VOX were done with the mc012, so not surprised there... had the 80Hz rolloff switch engaged on the DMP3, too... IMO the cymbals sound even fuller in the new mix... whatcha think? Thanks for listening again, man!

Samitch :o uh oh... :o

...waiting for the whupping I'm gonna get... :o ... and I even missed the deadline by 2 minutes :D

Sam, it ain't bullsh** when we in the clinic say it's AMAZING you (and chris, and Sluice... etc) can crank the stuff out as fast as you do... If I call in well from work next time, maybe some more will get done ;)

...Monday night sound good for a new, more reasonable deadline? :D  :(

Check out the new mix, if you want... maybe it sounds better (a little crushed, but better  ) that is, if you're not pissed ;)

BTW the thing about the solo... listen to "Sharp Dressed Man".. the solo in that is similar... it's just two strings one tone apart being played... that's it :) (not that my tone compares to ZZTop's)... thanks bro, for following my meager attempts at music.

chris-itch ;)

I haven't actually done the hiss removal yet (was under a strict deadline... there was no time!  ;)) but IMO it doesn't really need it... you're right... it did sound good, esp. soloed. BTW if anyone guesses what was f'ing up the mix... uh :o... you will have impressed... someone :o (then I'll let everyone know what it was)

wow!.....i must be hearing the "new' version....holy shite THOSE DRUMS ARE FUCKING GRRRREAT!!!!....wow...what is that?....i mean how is that ?.....that breakdown section is sweet...at around 2:40 er so......cool deal here...man those drums are just so powerful...wow......no references to genitalia ...nice job...!!!...

sorry about taking so long....im a busy guy with a baby due anyday now.......but still i should have got to this sooner sorry man.

version 2

Definitely better in most spots.. The part at around 50 seconds when the distorted rhythm falls in and out is still there, and I'm not crazy about that, but that's probably just preference.. Those harmonies are awesome.. I have mixed feelings about this because some things sound better on the first one, but most of it sounds better on the second.. The slight out of tune-ness around 1:40 is cool I guess, but out of tune nonetheless.. This tune really grew on me.. Lumber is still my favorite, but this is a close second! :D

There is a lot to digest in this song, so as I listen more, I will drop some more input.. I'm diggin' it though!

Let me spin it for a little while and I'll be back with more..

I really like your vox Chad...

Great stuff Chadly.......
Very unique........ came back for another listen and once again, impressed like the first.......
.....I know the song a little better now, so it sits in my head better. Love it man.....

great!

this tune has definitely grown on me.. I still say the cymbals are too loud in some spots.. Not the frequencies, the volume.. It's not too bad though.. The song is cool enough that I can let it go! :) I want to see at least 5 songs on your page by Christmas! :D

you have a great style brah!

so get crackin'!

thanks

Thanks to all who've listened, and may not have responded. Especially those who've not told me the background vocals on "FACE" are flat!! :D  ;)

Jamal Hey man as soon as mini-Jamal pops his head into the world, give us a shout! :D Drums are just the LM4. Thanks for listening...

Sam-age So you don't like the distortion guitar at 0:50? Hmm... so I guess you're not liking the same guitar sound in the instrumental break? It's possible it just doesn't fit the toon... The out of tune stuff I'll work on. Everyone's sensitive about their voice, and you understand that... glad you like mine. Appreciate your ears man :)

G-Force (Mike) Thanks G. You know, you're a great asset to this board. I hope you never get sick of this place and stick around a long time :) I envy your voice and talent... and yes... the punk-rock carrot is nice ;)

Sam #2 Youre amazing my friend... you find time to support about 10 other people's stuff, my stuff and write 6 songs a week :) You've been too friendly about this song and never said anything about the flat BGVs :D  ;) 5 songs by Christmas? Sure... hope someone doesn't get mad when "Riches to Rags" appears 5 times on the "Chainsaw Haircut" d/l page :D

Briefly... on "Sunshine":

This is not a "gay" song :D It's not about my friend per se... it's about being alone... when you've got no-one to talk to but the sun... it still shines down on everyone--even those of us who're by ourselves... depressing, eh? :p So "Sunshine" isn't a person; it's literally the sun... (at least that's the interpretation I give it)...

6 1/2 yr old toon; bass, rhythm guitar (2), ebows (2), wind sound all recorded 2 yrs ago (w/out benefit of homerecording.com) on the VS880... everything else to Cubase.

Lead vocal chain: mc012-->DMP3-->dbx DDP compressor-->Cubase

Dist. Guitar chain: Les Paul Studio-->J Station-->Crate DSP80 amplifier (mic'ed)-->Shure Beta 56/mc012-->DMP3 (both mics)-->dbx DDP compressor(both channels)-->Cubase

Realizing this isn't everyone's cup of tea, this will be the last bump... I will update this file today sometime (to fix the out of tune BGVs and tone down the cymbals)... if you want to check it out, check NWR's front page... (any major revisions will be put in another thread in about a week/2wks)... any new responses which would be surprising actually will be thanked by PM.

Now, off to check everyone elses stuff! You guys rock.

Chad

Hey dude, thanks for the welcome.

I like the fact that this is semi-adventurous. I didn't care for the git tone on the left side. Too thin and tinny .....

I really liked the change around 2:55 or so but, it could have been soaked and built a little more evenly. Add something sooner and let the build come with a solid grade.

You could definitly use some vocal elements to fill and smooth. I like the vox tracks you have. Maybe try singing along with melody and binding in mind and see what falls out.

Hope you can gleen a drop of info from this post.

Peace,
Theron.

I think the way this is recorded, on an artistic level, really works with the feelings you were dealing with at the time...there are times during this when the whole thing sounds like it is going to fall apart and that creates tension which makes this an interesting piece of music to listen to...sure you can re-record and re-track and get it real tight, but this version has a lot going for it in terms of the feelings you were going through, and I will take that over polish anytime! :) Just me, of course...I love production too, but sometimes just leaving something alone is a statement unto itself!

Very nice piece of work here...Okay, but if you do re-track it I'm sure I'll change my mind and tell you it sounds even better...ha ha :)

Nice piece of writing!

hey!!!!! lookie what i found!!! chad, this song is to cool!! it's out of whack in a groovy way!! i couldn't stop bobbin my head! that bass line is funkin groovealicious!! i wish it was 10 minutes long!!!

Version 2

I'm just getting around to your most recent mix. Always a pleasure to revisit this one. Don't get mad, b/c I'm sure you made huge changes that make it easier for you to sleep at night (I know how that is, believe me), but the first one sounded great, and this one sounds great, and I'm not sorry for bumpin' this thread, b/c there are people who haven't heard this who should. Man, that sustained guit during the breakdown is just absolutely cool.

Negative-ism - On your next tune (i.e., next June), try something for me. On both of the song's you've posted, you have a couple of places where you go UP in the vocal register at or near the end of a phrase for emphasis. The dynamic is great, but the timbre is not great...just in those spots. I mean, it sounds like you're almost JUMPING on the note in order to hit it, and then retreating in haste like you just gave the schoolyard bully a wedgie and you're trying to get away with it. My suggestion (and that's all it is) is that you lay into those places...("I'm not the one to be SI-LENT") in a way that makes your voice distort a little...roughen it up, just for effect. I know you're an avid student of music and voice, even if it's only through reading everything you can get your hands on, and I'm sure you've read that you're not supposed to do that to your voice...but I promise you, it will not trash your vocal cords if you're just doing it for a couple of notes at a time, and you're not doing it 5 nights a week.

By the way, I "warm up" for a vocal take like that (i.e., the cookie monster vocal) by singing "Have You Ever Seen The Rain," by CCR, in the same key, and at full volume. 2x through that sucker, and you're good to go.

Yeah, I know you didn't want this bumped, so feel free to flame me publicly, b/c it'll keep this thread on the front page for awhile. :D

I missed this one Dude!...and am proud to ressurect it back to the 1st page.NO Pussification here!I like all the levels and the overall groove and feel to this one.Good vox and guitar.Awsome feedback/ebow or whatever it is...sounds mint!Waves are a nice touch :D

Chad--you're a freakin' genius. No mix comments cause everybody's gone there already. Your stuff is so rich with ideas, it can't be digested in one listen. I need to download this and savor.

I had to download this again just in case it was remixed..

this is an excellent tune.. those drums are sick!
