Okay, this is going to be extremely annoying, I know. This has been discussed. But i have seriously been considering getting a CAD M179 here recently. I have an AKG Perception 220, but i'm not all that crazy about it. I need something that reproduces a really good acoustic instrument(guitar, violin, mandolin) and a really, really decent vocal sound. It will be for bluegrass, contemporary christian, and southern gospel genres. I have heard the CAD can do this but I have heard some negative things also. Any suggestions??? My budget is about $100-$175. Thanks in advance!

Part of the problem with your question is that the needs of acoustic instruments and vocalists aren't always quite the same. Sad to say, I don't think you are going to get an instrument mic that's appreciably better than the Perception on your budget. I'd keep the Perception, and use it on guitar, mandolin, etc., and I'd probably get a Marshall Electronics (MXL) V67G, for about $99. Put that on vocals. Some really good singers, especially women, may prefer the Perception, but most boys will do very well with the V67.

Any thoughts on the Rode NT-1a for acoutic and vocals?

I found this clip from WhiteStrat's site on the CAD M177

Some great playin' by the way! :-)

Has a pretty decent sound. I like the way it brings the mids out.

The rode NT1a is a good microphone. a bit on the bright side in the upper range.
But if you where to have it modified it will be a great microphone.

hmm... some people say if your going to get a RODE Nt1a, Nt2a delivers a whole lot more for a little more money($150 :-) Is it worth it? Do I still need to completely rule out the m179? I've heard a lot of good things on it. As far as vocals, acoustic instruments, and even toms. Is there really a huge quality difference between the CAD M179 and NT 1a?

I've got both those mics...and no, I don't think so. They both pretty much record...strangley enough...the sound of my guitar and the sound of my shaker or the sound of my voice. If I play back the results I can usually guess each time if it's the guitar, shaker or voice I'm hearing. I dunno...I like em.
