I was looking to pick up four tom mics, the house set has a 10, 12, 14, 16 inch toms. My choices are pretty much up to anything. I don't know if I should get different mics for each tom, or the same mic but in a quadruplette or what. I'd like to keep costs at the minimum, but not trying to say I am cheap and want crap. I am looking particularly at AT Pro 25, Sennheiser e609 Silver, Shure SM57, Sennheiser MD421 ( quite expensive when added up 1200) Audix Micro-D , Sennheiser e602,or for kicks the Shure PG tom mics, :-P and that's all I really know of. Help?

Get the e 602. They sound enough like the 421s and they can take a stick hit. sm-57s are fine, but nothing special. The PG stuff is crap and so are the audix mics. I've heard good things about the e 609s but I've never tried them. They don't look like they could take too many hits.

I like these

I've not used any of the mics you listed for that application but
I recently started using the Oktava MK 319's on toms and just love the results.

Here's a short sample of the Oktava's in action.

i head the 609s sound good on lower toms, like the floors. for the high toms iwas thinking about the 604s myself.

i say 2 of each.

By "house set", BurnBarfield, I'm assuming you're talking about a kit that gets played and used by a lot of people. Honestly, I'd stay away from condensers for industrial-strength use. Sennheiser 421's have long been the industry recording tom mic. I'd recommend you invest in them.

If you're really looking for a less expensive option, Studio Projects B1's are serious tom mics. They condensers, but at $79 a pop nobody's gonna cry if you have to replace one.

Dot, you are correct in your assumption. I was mostly looking at the Senn MD421 as tom mics. Yet, I didn't know using a condenser on a tom would work well, with all of the bleed and all. If it does, I have a couple of MXL990s I could throw on toms, would they be worth a shot?

condensers sound great on toms but they are very unforgiving. They sound better a few inches away. If the drummers dynamics are a not quite right, you will have a hell of a time making this work.
