Tom mic's pickup up weird noise.

I am NOT a Gear Whore. ;)
so i bought these cute little audix ADX-90 mics for toms, they were on clearance for $69 so i bought two. they were picking up this terrible noise when i hit the toms, so i figured it was the heads and i bought new heads. its still there, but not as bad.

it kinda sounds like a buzz after you hit the drum. almost like if you where to hit a drum and let your stick rest on the drum, how it jumps up and down making noise. and i already have moongels too.

maybe when i get home, i can scrounge up a sample of it. any thoughts? i think its the vibrations of the head being picked up?

should i get rid of the mics? i dont hear it through the overheads...
 
Try taping/tightening up the clamp and screw to see if that helps. My guess is that you've got vibration somewhere between the clamp assembly and our hoops.
 
I always found if your going to muffle your toms for micing moongels don't do a very good job for a start, O rings are good for micing though.
But I only ever muffled my toms for micing 5 or 6 times, they just didn't sound as good as un muffled.

You may be micing the heads too close also.

If you are happy with your tom sound without the mics, I don't see why they should even be there.

What mounts are you using, if you are using a type of mount that isn't particularly stable (ie. optimount) it could be the drum shaking.

If all else fails take the heads off and thump the shell and listen for loose screws/ hardware. Check all screws.

thats what it is. its a one piece thing.

i like the sound of the toms, but i just figured i'd close mic to get more clarity.
 
I've never used a drum clamp that didn't do this. I tried a bunch of them and that's the way it goes. Mic stands are a must when recording. You might be able to get away with them live.
 
so its not the drums? its coming from the clamps?
 
wow, i didnt think they were moving at all.

ill clip on to something else i guess.
