Can anyone tell me the best way to place clip mics for toms? Do you place them at ann angle to the skin or face down to the skin?

It depends, If you point the mike at the middle of the head you get the attack, if you point it closer to the rim, you tend to get more bottom. If you have the mic and the drum and the recorder, experiment. point it one way record a few hits, point it a different way, record a few hits. See which one you like. This sort of thing changes with drummers, drumsets, and drum heads. (and style)

The best thing to do is to experiment with the placement.
Try pointing them at a slight angle toward the center of the drum .... see how it sounds.
Try pointing them straight down at the head .... see how that sounds.
You can even try pointing them at the shell .... see how that sounds.
You should also try all of the different placements with varying capsule heights. The slightest changes in mic orientation can create big changes in the way sound is. Not to mention room acoustics and drum tunning.
What works for one persons setup (kit, room and mic placement) may sound like crap on the next guys setup.
It takes time, but it's time well spent, to experiment with all of the different variables.

Cheers lads. Will do some experimenting in the studio next week and hopefully have a decent drum sound. I will post some samples if possible so folk can critique in a while.
