What's a good Rundgren song for reference?

Preferably 1974-ish . . . ideally something from the album "A Wizard . . . "

Something that really typifies his production style ?

Theres The Nazz stuff{Hello its Me}..

Really though..I like his work with Hall and Oats..Can't be sure {its been awhile} I think he did "Abandoned Lunchenet{sp?}"which is one of their best albums

Back then I used to think he had a large thumbprint..I think that his production is in the "smooth" range.Very vocal driven..Vocal hamonies as pads..Kinda glossy..He was very active back then,I'm sure there are alot of other acts he did that others can give you a better answer.Good stuff

Todd is the MAN! Wizard was a good album and fairly representative of his stuff from that era. But check out the album Something/Anything? from a year or two earlier. One of my all time favs. "I saw the light" is a killer production, and "Couldn't I Just Tell You" is pure pop genious! That album also has the updated version of "Hello It's Me". I always liked the "LaLa Means I Love You" medly too. I believe you'll find that one on Wizard. While your at it, check out "RUNT". Some great tunes on that one too. We Gotta Get You a Woman.

Real Man is very cool. Utopia is my all time favorite.
 
He also produced Xtc's "skylarking" which is arguably their best record. Excellent production on that one.

I love XTC!Their production is always brillant{IMO}!"Dear God"great single{wasn't gonna be on the record}..They didn't get on very well with Todd..Matter of fact I've read that they hated working with him..Still "Sky Larking" is very good..Just babbleing:o :D

Also for Todd R's later rock production.."The Persuit of Happiness"..The one with the single "I'm a Adult Now"..rocks pretty good

I hear ya-I heard they had a hard time making that record as well-but that is a near perfect pop-record (minus a few songs Andy let the other guys sing heh). "Summers Cauldron" is an absolute masterpiece-the bass groove in that song just kills me.....
 
I just picked up a "best of" of his the other day. His production techniques sound a little dated to me, but he's still Todd the God, and a great songwriter.

Its a 'later' one than you asked for but its a great production...Nearly Human....a lot of it was digital and as i remember most tracks went down as one...not much tracking involved....
 
I will actually answer the question....
"When The Shit Hits The Fan/Sunset BLVD" from A Wizard.
The vinyl album is on the low-fi side (due to the 28 min per side). The CD is better but still sounds home studio-ish. If you can beyond that...The sped up background vocals. The "real" sounding snare. Cool reverb and echo. The slowing breakdown part into the next song. Synth sequencing. It's all there.

OK, "Tic Tic Tic It Wears Off" from A Wizard.. is another good example.
