Today 5th April..............11 years ago.......Kurt Cobain "left" the planet........

Today it is 11 years ago the man died,

Does he still count? What has he done for the image of popular music? What impact did he make on the industry? Who else is there out now who does a similar job? Can we simply forget or ignore him?

Fire away......................

Eddie :)

Courtney Love still sucks mightily.

Okay okay, just remember eh, we are not allowed to go into the controversial issues here, only guitarstuff please.............oh forgotten, Courtney plays guitar as well, but Kurt could not teach her to play well.......... or........? :D ;)

Eddie :)

r.i.p

HE SHOULD STILL BE HERE. I AM A BELIEVER THAN SHE HAD him taking out. i also think if he was still around his music would be completly differnt to what it was. i think he wanted to branch out into a more mellow type of music. something like badly drawn boy but with more guitar and deeper lyrics,
hell we all have to go some time i guess

Are you kidding?

Is there a day that goes by when you don't hear at least 3 Nirvana songs on the radio? And they sound as good today as they did then...

Must be tuned into the wrong station!!!

Hmmm my radio does not give me any songs, but it makes me write songs though....................... ;)

Eddie :)

I feel bad frances was left with courtney....that would suck.......also after hearing songs like "do re mi" "You know you're right" and "talk to me" its obvious he had SO MUCH more to offer.... :(

. . . and half the bands on the radio still want to be Nirvana.

Kurt who?

Never heard of him

Personally, I don't know that he had that great of an impact on music.
If you said Jimmy Hendrix, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Beattles, Freddy Mercury, Ray Charles, The Sugar Hill Gang, John Lee Hooker, Billie Holiday, or BB King. I would have said yes!

Kurt Cobain was a great artist, did not have that much impact on music, IMHO.

Wow. OK, Nirvana:

1) destroyed hair bands
2) ended long boring guitar, bass, drum solos, 'virtuoso' guitar heros, etc.
3) did away with silly stage shows
4) opened up radio for legions of alt-rock bands
5) was worshipped by a generation of budding rock musicians, which clearly shows on rock radio 11 years later
6) restored songwriting to a personal, introspective focus vs. the vapid, banal sex/drugs/rock and roll party lyrics of the late '80s
7) created a soundtrack for the disaffected youth of Gen X

Well, I guess everyone has to have an idol.

IMO the following bands were much better than Nirvana
AC/DC
Queen
Van Halen
The Police
The Eagles
Scorpion
Kiss
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin

To me Nirvana was a Chick's Rock-n-Roll band like Cinderella, and Poison.

I mean what guitar riffs does anyone want to play from Nirvana?
Most guitarist play
Stairway to Heaven
Hotel California
Black Magic Woman (just about any Santana Song).

This is just my two cents though.

Hmmmm....

Most folks considered Cobain and Company as being the point of the spear on a new generation of music, that continues to inspire and shape the music of today... Not unlike the same description given to Zep, Beatles, Stones, etc. Some folks even called him the Lennon of the 90's based on his musical vision... Personally, I thought that was a bit of a tall order, but I would certainly compare him as the Jim Morrison for that generation...

The music world changed when Nirvana came out to play... I would think that changing history qualifies them as being able to rub shoulders with the bands you mentioned...

I never was a huge fan (I was in 'hair bands' back then.. lol) but the stuff I heard impressed me...

Just my .02

(Nice avatar btw)

:)

Is it true that Nirvana's first album was made for $600. Or is that an urban legend.

Like I said it was my just my 2 cents.

I don't know that Nirvana was responsible for the death of hair bands, I thought that RUN DMC, the Beastie Boys, and overall RAP or as it's now called Hip Hop did that. I remember crusin at the beach and there was a lot of BASS going on, with the exception of the Surfer which they were playing PUNK or Thrash but they weren't crusin.
I never got into the Hip Hop, RAP thing but having a box in your trunk with big 12" drivers was the big thing back then.

Again it's only my opinion and has no bearing on how other people experienced that era or that Band for that matter.

That timing doesn't seem right to me. DMC/Beastie Boys were big at exactly the same time as the hair bands. A lot of girls had both in their record collections. White guys did too, but probably wouldn't admit either one

After 1991, nobody with any self-respect would admit to owning a hair band album.

Maybe. To me is was a great musician, but really did not impact music that much. Sorta like M&M or Marilyn Manson.

Personally I started to go in a different direction when all these "new" bands like Nirvana, Guns & Roses, NIN, Crash Test Dummies and listened to U2, Dire Straits, 10,000 Maniacs, Sting, etc. However, my favorite bands (AC/DC, The Police, Queen, etc) were never replaced with any other bands that were great and fun to listen to IMHO.

Today I really like The Darkness (a new British Retro Hair Band I guess) which has that old 80's sound and that's about it, White Zombie (or Rob Zombie), Ramstein, Propellerheads, Moby, and others. Sure there are some good songs by some groups but no band that really stands out. All the Alternative Rock bands sound the same, they all try to make the same music, and they try to appeal to some generation X sense of hatred which is just not there anymore for me.

I'm not trying to take away from Kurt, but IMHO I don't see the impact he made.

Your right...

Billie Holiday

I remember when Billie's album came out.

I started wearing torn jeans, flannel shirts and work boots. The clothes were a way to fit in with the fashion style he created called Grunge. I threw out all my Poison records and any neon clothing I had. He made it cool and alright to be a non-jock. His music inspired me to buy my first guitar and learn to play. In fact I still listen to his music today.

No wait, that was Nirvana, sorry...

Obviously you are wrong, since Billie Holiday was a woman, not a man and is was a Jazz/Blues singer from the 40s not the 80s or 90s.
