To Go Windows or Mac - Practically

What is the best way to go if I want to have a laptop when I attend college; internet, networking, files (research, getting files off of school servers...) and compatibility as well as being able to record something with. For instance, Logic I have *some* experience with and would feel most comfortable, now searching has told me that Logic wouldn't work with a MOTU2408mk3 on Windows because of the apparent 'driver' acess with WDM or something, but Mac shows that it has only one 'driver' to work with...that way I have the best choice among editing and recording on the screen.
But, over all, what is more important is the fact that the ability to record on the computer doesn't interfere with the ability to do anything else. I still need a reliable, fast computer (laptop preferred, recommended an iBook) that can get on the same internet, same network, and open the same files as the wonderful windows counterpart that the rest of the world seems to run on but the recording industry.
Any suggestions, input, and real-life comparisons would be greatly appreciated. Mac, by the way, says that it can operate 'seamlessly' with any office document Office97 and newer. But I have had friends and macs at school that seem to prove this wrong.
Thanks for any help.

laptop tech is changing fast. i have an admitted amd bias as i'm a computer engr. if were me i would look at possibly an amd64 processor based laptop.
amd64 is blazing fast. you should read the cakewalk forms and the digi users group on what people think of the performance of this chip.
and talk to people running studio gear using it. to get an idea of successfull amd64 daw based laptops which they are also using for all the other features you want in the audio recording realm.

amd is american micro devices. they make only the processor.
then computer manufacturers take the processor and buld the laptop using it.
do your research carefully on adding pro sound - maybe firewire.
this is very new technology.
i would stay away from usb. too many folks seem to have probs.
just google for manufacturers of laptops.

shawn...lots of amd processor for laptops info on this site in the forums...
notebookreview.com
a word of caution if you go this route. make sure you get a 64 using the newer manufacturing processes. apparantly they are changing.

I noticed Fireport by Presonus....looks good, any input?
