and if I have to buy a pro amp, which brand do you guys recommend?

please help!

thanks for reading!

What is your budget?

What other equipment do you own?

What are you trying to accomplish with your equipment?

What level of professionalism are you trying to reach?

Etc...............

Post us with some more information. ;)

spinsterwun,

My budget is not set yet, but it would have to be low-mid range budget. but I have to first decide whether or not I need an amp to hook my speaker up to before I decide on final budget.

my current set up is:

p4 computer
a SB audigy card
echo mia
mackie 1202 vlz mixer
tannoy reveal monitor speakers
roland xv88 synthesizer with Giga studio

I have my sb audgy and echo mia routed to my mixer and my mixer's output goes back in my echo mia for recording and to my Pioneer audio receiver for playback monitoring.

I want to be as professional as possible, so I need some advise as to whether or not I really need an amp to hook my speaker up to?

thanks

I assume because he already bought the Tannoys. What kind of power handling are the speakers rated for?

Why not go for powered studio monitors?

Well, I brought the tannoys not long ago, so I would like to use it for some more before spending money on monitors again...

Matty boy,

the instruction book for the tannoys said the power handings are:

Average (2) = 50 W rms
Programme = 100 W rms

Check out a Hafler TA 1600. $250. It would power your Tannoys quite well. I think it would be a big improvement over your Pioneer. Pick one up from Guitar Center and A/B it against the Pioneer; if you don't notice the improvement, you have 30 days to take it back.

If $250 is beyond your budget, the Hafler TA 1100 is $200 but has less power.

A/B'ing your Pioneer with a decent amp is a good idea to determine how transparent the Pioneer is. I.e., how much the Pioneer colors the sound. If it is fairly transparent, keep the Pioneer (for now) and get some good mic's.

Also, ditch the soundblaster.

I wouldnt go for anything less than the hafler P series. By hafler's own admission there is a significant dif bet the 2 series. Theres no advantage in going with the mostly mediocre active monitors in the $400-800 range over a good passive speaker and good amp. Additionally you can pick up a second and third reference for much less by not buying a new amp for each speaker.

If you are looking to spend $400-500 on an amp, the P series is definitely better than the TA series. But I'm not sure buying a $400-500 amp to power a $350 pair of monitors gets the biggest bang for your buck. Nothing against the Reveals, but a TA1600 is a solid amp and would not be the weakest link in your signal chain. It would also save you a couple hundred bucks as compared to the P series, which you could put toward another mic. But that's a value judgment more than a quality judgment.

good idea, thanks for the advice everyone.

Lopp, I need to keep my soundblaster audigy for midi stuff since my echo mia doesn't have midi. :)
