Tips on playing guitar in the cold weather?

You could do like all the modern metal boy bands and wear fingerless gloves!
do they really?

That's not new, of course. Remember The Music Machine? circa late 60's.
They were one of the early sorta hard rockish bands and they did that.

Anyhow, my tip is this:

Run your hands under the hottest water you can stand. Do it for at least 3 mins.

Wear 2 sets of pants, a couple shirts and a hoodie. Keeping your vitals warm lets your body keep everything else warm.

why would you do that when you could just blow a hair dryer on your fingers?
I'm tellin' ya'll flat out .... a hair dryer is the way to go. I played outside a casino one winter right on the Mississippi river. I mean we were actually on a barge over the Mississippi and an open railing was at our backs open to the river wind.
For some reason everytime we played out there it was in the 20's .... coldest night was 22 degrees.
We did that probably at least 6 times that winter.
We each had a blow dryer and had zero problems.

Damn I forgot all about them! I remember the name but don't know much about them.

I just youtubed them. They wore gloves on their strumming hands. Hilarious. Good music. Gonna start listening to them.

The pocket handwarmers make sense as the best alternative of warming your hands quickly and without using any forbidden extra energy. I purchased a whole sackful during a clearance for 50 cents apiece a few yrs back..but if you like the hairdryer suggestion, then just ask your dad for permission to use one. He may relent to that

If you are old enough to work, offer to chip in some dollars on the fuel bill to cover warmer temps during practice time. If you aren't old enough to have a job, perhaps you can work out some bartering(extra chores or giving up some other privilage)with your dad for extra heat time.

Parents usually love to see their kids become resourceful by taking on more responsibility in living expenses. But I wouldn't attempt to hide an electric heater..for one thing it could be a hidden hazzard(very unfair to other members of the household)..two, sneaky is not a good seed to nurture as it grows into a nasty vine that will choke you in the end..and three..if you ever want your parents to trust or give you ANY kind of credit as to being mature and deserving of respect, you need to honor and respect their rules or move out.

If you're a minor and your father is keeping it so cold in the home that it would actually impact one's ability to play an instrument, then perhaps you should contact DHS.

Come on, let's be real. For one, dude hasn't come back to this thread. Two, how likely is it that the dad is really keeping the house so cold that human hands cease to function properly? I mean, it has to be pretty damn cold if regular things like warming up exercises don't work. I doubt it's that cold. Kid is probably just whining for nothing or being wimpy. :cursing:  :D

It really is good music. I have their first album .... if I find it I'll burn ya' a copy.
I've always wanted to do a modernized heavier version of 'Talk Talk'.

That was a great tune when it first came out, but some of my band members didn't think so. Screw em.

my hands are cold witch is hindering my ability to play guitar as well, and asking my dad to turn up the heat is like asking Hitler to release the Jews. any of you guys have any tips for playing under these conditions?
Get a hot water bottle and put it under your top. If you play guitar the way I do, you'll soon be so hot that you'll be grateful the house is cold ! It really works. I used to play guitar outdoors in December and I was never cold.
It didn't, unfortunately, improve my guitar playing.

I play in the open air in Spain in January and the temperature can be 5-6 degrees above freezing.I use a pair of fingerless gloves by 'Thinsulate' and they work fine. Cost approx £5.

The temperature for playing fast licks must be at least of 15 C, if it's lower then play slowly. Don't overplay your hands. You can hurt them!
