If you are looking for the sound of a classic 50 or a Jazz Chorus, the JCM800 isn't the amp for you. Then again, there isn't too much death metal being played on a Jazz Chorus.

did he get it second hand? the sound can go to shit if its not biased properly so if someone just jammed new tubes in and havent been changed it can effect the sound BIG time

Yep. Mostly do rockabilly, light jazz, and some blues.
