tips for mixing down vocals for clarity (Cool Edit)

I have a home studio and a pretty decent mic too (shure sm48). However I have not built a vocal booth yet.
I use the CoolEdit for recording the vocals but I am not too impressed with the sound I am getting.
I think the main reason is because i have the mic plugged directly into my soundcard's mic input, and I don't think my sound card is of premium quality, (it's a Nightingale 128bit soundcard).
But, i do know that Cool Edits transform features can do wonders but I don't know how to use them too well.
if anyone has a tutorial, tips or links on how to use them properly, I would greatly appreciate it.
 
A couple of things here.

Cool Edit can change the sound you record with your cheapo soundcard, but it can't improve it. It's kind of like working with diamonds - if you start with a brown, low-grade diamond from Kalimantan, no matter how skillfully and attractively you cut it, it's still gonna lack the sparkle, clarity and brilliance of a really good South African diamond. Click on search at the top of the page and do a search on Soundblaster cards. They're pretty cheap, and if you get the right one, just fine to work with. Things will start to sound better right away, and you'll need less help from CEP's transforms.

Second thing. If you're more precise about what you're trying to achieve with Cool Edit, you'll get way more useful help. Right now your question's too broad to be useful - it's sort of like you asked: "How can I cook something good?" To be useful to you, we need to know what kind of food you're trying to cook, what equipment you've got, what ingredients, and what you've tried so far.

As for the tutorial, have you done the tutorial CD that comes with Cool Edit?
 
try using noise reduction on your track. i always put acoustic duet from the chourusin the effects. it makes your voice thicker plus covers some impurties if you now what im saying. i use it every time and all i do is turn the spread down just a little bit. its more than you asked for but i hope it helpos you out. i use a samson mic sometimes and have good vocals tracks. GOOD LUCK!

When this thread started, my youngest child wasn't born yet. Now he's recording, lol.
