When I sing I am fine with all my other tones from singing to whatever, but I cannot scream, When I try I feel it hurting in my throat so I know im doing it wrong to,

can someone help me with tips to make good screamo tones whether I really am screaming or it just sounds like it?

Screams I like -

Deftones
Thursday
Relative Ash
The refused

and so on........

It hurts for a while, but eventually your throat gets calloused or something, then it doesn't hurt anymore. :)

i usually scream sorta quiet then run it through a guitar amp with some overdrive (not too much or you'll end up sounding like a scarey demon - which is sometimes cool).

or deal with the pain and expect to lose your singing voice in a couple years, and your talking voice a few years later.

yeah, Iv done the overdrive thing myself adn it does work great in my opinion, I was just hoping I could go from singing to screaming without a pedal, any other ideas?

for live stuff i always bring along my sm57 - just get close and scream your head off and let the mic do some distorting for you then back off a little for the singing parts. for recoreding just use the amp, i think it works best and also provides a little bit of a contrast between the singing tone and the screaming tone.

PS - don't let the sound guy know your doing this cause they have controll issues. just sound check with the singing distance.

dont let the soundguy know? lol you sound like the dumbasses ive had to mix live sound for, but the sm57 is great for scream vocals. btw faking screaming for records sounds well just that fake its about the emotion of the song if your not really gonna scream it why the hell did you write it?

I'm in a screamo band. and i'll tell you recording wise, that thehre is nothing like a genuine scream.

I have tried all these amp/distorting techniques for recording...but they just don't suffice, at least i think.

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/432/fight_or_flight.html - that's my band, listen to "lights out", or "jermania". I came in has minimal screams on that song.

but yeah, i'm not the screamer so I can't REALLY tell you how to do it. but, it's more or less ust yelling, really loud.

if you want a new song, where it is more of a scream, less of yell, you can AIM me - THELBIGS. that song is not on the net.

I dunno what they used on "Full Collapse"... but on the new Thursday album [I think I heard someone say it's going to be called "War All The Time"] they used a Soundelux ELUX 251 into a Daking Mic Pre/EQ into a Daking Compressor into an Innertube Audio "Atomic Squeezebox".

yeah i agree, the real scream is the best. i usually just use them as background stuff to add to a couple of songs. i'm not in a real screaming band.

the only real screaming bands i've ever recorded were like zao and living sacrifice, the harder stuff, and they loved the amp distortion along with the real screaming to get that bat out of hell kinda sound (i'm not talking about the meatloaf album).

yeah i think i am that dumbass, but i rarely get to work with fine live engineers like yourself, so the morans they usually put behind the board know almost nothing about music and typically can't get a good sound. so i do what i have to to make the live sounds i want. when i have the privelage of working with engineers of your calibare i tell them the plan up front - there, does that make you feel better?

SCREAM LIKE YOU HAVE A PAIR WHEN YOU DO, OR DON'T SCREAM AT ALL. IT TAKES TIME TO LOOSEN THE THROAT, ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR VOCAL CHORDS. WHO CARES RIGHT?????

dennis from the refused has a really quiet scream....... also i belive that chino screams quietly in songs like elite.....but loudly in other songs...........

by quiet i don't mean whisper....... but i don't know how to describe it..........it took me a long time to figure it out and i had 2 friends that tried to teach me.

i think that thursday just screams balls out as hard and loud as they can..........same with poison the well and from autumn to ashes.............i haven't heard the other band you listed.....

Thanks for the advice guys!

FLETCHER - could you tell me were you read this?

"I heard someone say it's going to be called "War All The Time"] they used a Soundelux ELUX 251 into a Daking Mic Pre/EQ into a Daking Compressor into an Innertube Audio "Atomic Squeezebox"

Also DONKEY STYLE - could you explain teh quiet scream thing please?

I didn't read it, I wrote it. I was there... that is what was used.

Im a little confused, could you explain what you mean by that?

for screamo style screams just try to sing as loud as possible an octave above your range. honestly, that'll give you that really whiny screaming sound.

other than that theres honestly not a lot of technique to it. just scream man!

Yes it hurts your voice at first, and you do get used to it.

But unless all of your songs contain screaming and you sing these songs every night, then no, you will not do enough damage to your voice to screw up your singing. And you will not lose your voice, provided you practice the technique with enough moderation. Practice it until your speaking voice starts getting hoarse, and then stop until the voice returns back to normal (maybe wait the next day to practice). Eventually you will feel comfortable enough to where it actually feels good to rip out a scream on occasion and you will only need to warm up your voice enough to belt out a good yell.

He means, he was there. When they were recording. That's what they used.
