Hello,

I want to mix down my midi tracks, DXI tracks and add vocals to make one wave file. Here's my problem

Somehow, recording the outputs of my external midi module back into an audio track in Sonar results in an audio track that is somewhat faster and shorter than the original midi tracks. I confirmed this by playing the audio against one of the midi tracks. In the first few measures, you don't hear the difference, but by the end they are off by 3 (!) measures! (midi is 152 measues long, audio is about 149.

How on earth is this happening, and how do I fix it?

Thanks ever so much
(I've only posted 3 questions here since I found this site, but the responses I got have been so useful. I really appreciate it)

Layla

Just a guess, but in Options > Audio > Advanced there is a selection area for syncronization. I have mine set to Full Chase Lock. You might try changing this if yours is set to Word Clock.

Thank you both for such quick replies.

I'm going to try both suggestions

ps: I checked my audio> advanced. It was set to Full Chase Lock hmm

Lets see what the SOnar group has to say

You might try going to Cakewalk's discussion group and post this there. That newsgroup will answer this question perty quickly.

...not as quick as this site! Specialy on Cakewalk Forum with Dachay2tnr as candidate Moderator... :D. BTW, Layla, did you mean the tempo is getting faster or the audio just screwed ? How's the pitch ? Have you do sumthin' with latency setting in Options--> Audio ?

The inputs coming in from my keyboard ends up being slightly faster than the original Sonar midi tracks generating them! Pitch is fine, audio quality is fine.

Here's my response to a suggestion at Cakewalk (somone suggested I look at the Project > Clock settings

[snip]
I tried changing the clock settings -

Midi Sync didn't work - seems that's for an external
sequencer, my keyboard doen't have a sequencer.
I'm controlling it with Sonar.

The clock settings were on Audio when I opened
the control panel. I tried recording with the clock
set to internal - the resulting audio track was a bit
shorter than the original midi tracks (!)

If it wasn't clear from my first post, I'm controlling
my keyboard from Sonar, and I want to record the
sounds from my keyboard back into sonar.
[unsnip!]

...I got you Layla...
You set the clock to Internal ? It supposed to be set to Audio. I did what you did with no problem, Sequencing the MIDI to external synth in SONAR, play it and record the synth's audio out back to SONAR as audio track... right ? Set the Options --> Projects shown here...

Hope it helps...

i do the midi --> audio thing all the time.

sonar midi --> roland xv-3080 --> RNP --> tango24 --> sonar audio

make sure that you are recording and playing back at the same sampling rate.

i record and playback at 24bit/48khz

is the audio waveform display also 3 measures shorter than the midi?

also, are you using the same soundcard for recording and playback?

GOT IT (at least half way)

I have a real ghetto set up here. I'm using my 5 year old Aiwa Super-T Bass stereo as a pre-amp. I've had to get a hum elimator, so there are already some strange things floating around in my system.

I took the Alesis patch cable out of the Aiwa and put it directly into the sound card - now - I had tried this before, and go no signal - (because my volume was so low, so I wouldn't blow out the Aiwas little speakers)

SO - now my audio track is nicely synced with the midi, or at least what I have of my audio - because I've only got one channel of my stereo signal!

oy vey!

Any ideas on that? (I poked around a bit in Sonar, but I guess I"m missing somthing

Thanks for your patience with the newbie!
